Chapter 1: “Still Running to Daddy?”

The orchestra was already playing when Claire Bennett appeared at the entrance of the ballroom.
Three hundred guests turned toward her.
Crystal chandeliers glowed above rows of white roses. Candlelight reflected across the polished marble floor. At the far end of the aisle, Ethan Caldwell waited beneath a gold floral arch in a burgundy velvet jacket.
He looked perfect.
That was what everyone saw.
A handsome groom.
A wealthy family.
A beautiful bride.
But Claire did not walk toward him.
She stood frozen beneath the tall black doors, gripping the front of her wedding gown with trembling fingers.
Her veil hung unevenly behind her.
One pearl earring was missing.
And beneath the careful makeup on her cheek, a faint reddish mark had begun to show.
Her father noticed it immediately.
Robert Bennett rose from his seat in the front row.
“Claire?”
She looked at him.
The second their eyes met, the strength left her face.
“Dad.”
Claire hurried down the aisle, nearly stumbling over the lace hem of her gown.
Robert caught her before she fell.
She wrapped both arms around him and held on as if the entire ballroom were disappearing beneath her feet.
The music stopped.
Guests whispered.
Ethan remained near the altar, watching them with a tight smile.
Then he gave a quiet laugh.
“Still running to Daddy?”
Several guests looked uncomfortable.
Claire’s fingers tightened around her father’s tuxedo.
Robert slowly pulled back.
He studied her face.
“What happened?”
“I’m fine,” she whispered.
“No, you’re not.”
His eyes moved from the mark on her cheek to the faint discoloration near her wrist.
Claire quickly pulled the lace sleeve lower.
But it was too late.
Robert had already seen it.
He gently lifted her chin.
“Who did this?”
Claire opened her mouth, but no words came.
From the altar, Ethan sighed impatiently.
“She’s being dramatic again.”
Robert looked up.
The expression on his face did not change.
But something in the ballroom did.
The air seemed to become colder.
Ethan stepped down from the altar.
“We had an argument,” he said. “Claire became emotional. That’s all.”
Robert kept one arm around his daughter.
“What kind of argument?”
“One that doesn’t concern you.”
A few guests gasped.
Ethan’s mother, Victoria Caldwell, immediately rose from her seat.
She wore a silver gown and enough diamonds to catch every light in the room.
“Robert,” she said smoothly, “this is a private matter between two people who are about to become husband and wife.”
Robert looked at her.
“My daughter is standing in front of me afraid to speak.”
Victoria smiled without warmth.
“Claire has always been sensitive.”
Robert turned back to Claire.
“Tell me the truth.”
Her eyes filled.
Ethan watched her carefully.
That was when Robert saw something worse than fear in his daughter’s face.
He saw permission being requested.
Claire was not deciding whether to tell the truth.
She was waiting to see whether Ethan would allow her to.
Robert moved between them.
“You don’t need his permission to speak.”
Claire’s breath caught.
Ethan’s smile vanished.
“Robert, step aside.”
“No.”
“This ceremony is starting.”
“No,” Robert repeated. “It isn’t.”
A murmur moved through the ballroom.
Victoria approached them quickly.
“You cannot humiliate our family in front of everyone.”
Robert looked at Claire’s trembling hands.
Then he carefully removed the diamond ring from her finger.
He placed it on a nearby champagne table.
The ring landed against the glass with a small, sharp sound.
“This wedding is over.”
Ethan stared at him.
“You don’t have the authority to make that decision.”
Robert looked directly at his daughter.
“Claire does.”
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then Claire stepped behind her father.
It was a small movement.
But everyone saw it.
Ethan’s face hardened.
He lowered his voice.
“Think very carefully about what you’re doing, Claire.”
Robert turned toward him.
“Was that a warning?”
Ethan quickly glanced at the guests.
“No. Of course not.”
Claire reached into the hidden pocket of her gown.
Her hand was shaking as she removed a small silver flash drive.
“I copied everything,” she whispered.
Victoria’s face went pale.
Ethan stopped breathing.
Robert looked at the flash drive in his daughter’s palm.
“What is on it?”
Claire stared at the man she had almost married.

“Proof that this wedding was never about love.”
And before Ethan could reach her, someone locked the ballroom doors.
