CHAPTER 1 — THE DOOR THEY NEVER TALKED ABOUT

Nathan stood frozen at the bottom of the narrow staircase, the faint underground light flickering like a heartbeat.
The girl wasn’t afraid.
She simply looked at him… as if she had been expecting him.
Slow footsteps echoed behind her.
A woman appeared.
Late 60s. Thin coat. Calm eyes that carried years of secrets.
She didn’t ask who he was.
She already knew.
“You followed her,” the woman said quietly.
Nathan swallowed. “She’s been alone every night outside my restaurant.”
A faint, tired smile touched the woman’s face.
“She only looks alone,” she replied. “Because that’s how people choose to see her.”
Nathan’s eyes shifted past her shoulder.
What he saw inside the basement made his breath stop.
Warm lights. Blankets. Food crates. Drawings on the wall. Children sleeping peacefully.
Not a street child.
Not abandoned.
A hidden community.
The girl stepped closer to Nathan and gently tugged his sleeve.
“You gave me dinner,” she whispered. “But I already had a home.”
May you like
Nathan didn’t answer.
For the first time, he didn’t know what truth meant anymore.
