CHAPTER 3: THE WOMAN IN THE MOUNTAINS

Three days later, Ethan followed the last clue hidden inside Claire's files.
A small clinic.
A remote mountain town.
A false identity.
And a photograph taken only six months earlier.
For sixteen years, everyone had claimed Claire vanished.
Yet somehow she had been alive all along.
When Ethan arrived at the clinic, an elderly nurse recognized the photograph immediately.
"You came too late," she said softly.
Ethan's heart sank.
"What happened to her?"
The nurse smiled sadly.
"Nothing happened to her."
Relief flooded through him.
"Then where is she?"
The nurse handed him a letter.
"She knew this day would come."
His hands trembled as he opened it.
Dear Ethan,
If you are reading this, then you finally learned the truth.
I wanted to come home every day.
Every birthday.
Every Christmas.
Every moment I missed watching you grow up.
But leaving was the only way to keep you safe.
The people behind Parker Industries never stopped looking for me.
Because I knew what they had done.
Because I had proof.
Because I refused to stay silent.
Ethan wiped tears from his eyes.
At the bottom of the page was an address.
No explanation.
Just an address.
He drove through the night.
At sunrise, he arrived at a small lakeside house hidden among pine trees.
The front door opened slowly.
A woman stepped outside.
Older.
Wiser.
Scarred by years of hiding.
But unmistakable.
Claire.
For several seconds neither of them moved.
Then Ethan whispered,
"Why didn't you come back?"
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
May you like
"I never stopped trying."
And finally, after sixteen years, brother and sister embraced.
