Part 2
Part 2
At 12:38 a.m., Lauren opened Cole Whitmore's private safe.
She knew the combination.
Not because Cole trusted her.
Because years ago, before the lies and the secrets, he had once used their wedding anniversary for everything.
The safe clicked open.
Lauren expected documents.
Maybe hidden credit cards.
Perhaps evidence of the affair.
What she found was far worse.
A thick file folder sat on top.
Her name was written across it.
Lauren frowned.
Slowly, she opened it.
The first page made her blood run cold.
DIVORCE PREPARATION.
Her hands trembled.
Page after page detailed plans she had never known existed.
Private investigators.
Financial reports.
Draft custody agreements.
Bank statements.
Emails between lawyers.
Cole had been preparing for months.
Maybe longer.
And according to the documents, he intended to take everything.
The apartment.
Most of the money.
Even the twins.
Lauren sat frozen.
Then she reached the final page.
A handwritten note from Cole's attorney.
"Mrs. Whitmore currently has no independent income. With proper documentation regarding emotional instability after childbirth, primary custody should be attainable."
Lauren stared at the words.
Emotional instability.
Because she cried from exhaustion.
Because she had struggled after giving birth.
Because she had trusted her husband.
They were going to use her worst moments against her.
The room spun.
Then something inside her hardened.
Not anger.
Resolve.
She quietly photographed every page.
Every email.
Every signature.
Every piece of evidence.
By 2:00 a.m., she had copied everything onto a flash drive.
At 3:15 a.m., she called the only person she still trusted.
Her older brother, Daniel.
"Lauren?" he answered sleepily.
For several seconds she couldn't speak.
Then she whispered:
"Can you come get us?"
There was silence.
Then only one response.
"I'm already on my way."
Outside, Christmas snow continued to fall.
May you like
Inside, Lauren packed her children's clothes.
And before dawn arrived, the Whitmore family would disappear.
