Chapter 14 - The Church Where Graham Finally Told the Truth

We went to the church.

Not alone.

Not on Graham's terms.

Naomi stayed inside the nave thirty feet behind me.

Leo waited outside.

Two investigators retained by Naomi's firm watched the entrances.

Derek did not come.

He said Graham would leave the moment he saw him.

Helen stayed with my mother.

At 10:28 a.m., I sat in the last pew beneath stained glass and tried not to think about the fact that Graham had once stood in this building as a child while adults around him already knew my father's name.

He arrived at 10:34.

No suit.

No tie.

Dark coat.

He looked as though he had not slept.

He saw Naomi immediately.

"I said no lawyers."

"You also said get on your knees. Your instructions have lost some authority."

His mouth tightened.

He sat one pew ahead of me instead of beside me.

For several seconds, he stared at the altar.

"Dad knows about North River."

"So do I."

He flinched.

"Of course you do."

"Why did you ask me here?"

"Because Derek is going to make himself look like a whistleblower."

"He already admitted what he did."

"Not all of it."

"What did he leave out?"

Graham turned.

"He drove the Lincoln."

The statement hit hard, but I did not move.

"He was seventeen."

"Exactly."

"Your name is on the repair receipt."

"Because Dad used our names as codes."

Helen had said the same.

Vehicles meant Graham.

Problems meant Derek.

"If Derek drove it, why use your code?"

"To hide Derek."

"That makes no sense."

"It made sense to Dad. Derek was already a secret. Putting a payment under a legitimate son's family code was cleaner."

I watched Graham's face.

"Were you told this when you were thirteen?"

He looked away.

"Not all of it."

"How much?"

"I overheard Dad and Daniel Ward arguing."

"When?"

"Two days after the crash."

"What did they say?"

"Daniel said Derek should never have been put in the car. Dad said Derek needed to learn loyalty."

My stomach turned.

"Did they say he caused the crash?"

"Daniel said, 'The boy got too close.'"

"Which boy?"

"Derek."

"And the sedan?"

Graham stared at his hands.

"I thought Derek was driving it."

"Thought?"

"I was thirteen, Samantha. I heard fragments."

I leaned forward.

"Did you know my father was Luis Reyes when you met me?"

He closed his eyes.

"Not the first night."

"When did you know?"

"When I told Dad your name."

"How long after we met?"

"Three weeks."

Seven years of marriage condensed into three weeks.

"And what did Martin say?"

"He told me to keep seeing you."

The words hurt even though I already knew.

"Did that bother you?"

"Yes."

"Did it stop you?"

"No."

"Why?"

He looked at me.

"Because I was already falling in love with you."

I felt nothing when he said it.

Or maybe I felt too much to identify any single emotion.

"You keep using love like it cancels decisions."

"It doesn't."

"Then tell me the decisions."

Graham swallowed.

"Dad wanted access to Rosa."

"Through me."

"Yes."

"Did you help?"

"I asked you questions about her estate."

I remembered casual dinners.

Does Rosa own that apartment?

Did she keep Dad's papers?

Were you close?

Questions I had interpreted as interest in my family.

"You searched my things?"

He looked down.

"Once."

"How many times?"

"A few."

"How many?"

"I don't know."

"That's a lie."

He said nothing.

"Did you find the key?"

"No."

"Vanessa eventually did."

His head snapped up.

"You know about that?"

"I have video."

He swore softly.

"Dad told her the box belonged to the company."

"She impersonated me."

"I know."

"And you did nothing."

"I was trying to contain him."

I laughed once.

"You froze my accounts after slapping me. That is your idea of containing him?"

His face tightened with shame or anger.

I could not tell anymore.

"That night got out of control."

"No. You lost control. Those are different things."

He looked back toward the altar.

"Dad was pressuring me."

"You keep moving your hand onto his arm."

"I'm not excusing it."

"You are doing nothing but excusing it."

The church was almost empty, but my voice carried.

Graham lowered his.

"I supported the independent review."

"Because you want something."

He turned toward me.

"I want Dad out."

There it was.

Not justice.

Not truth.

Power.

"And then?"

"The board needs someone stable."

"You."

"I know the company."

"You approved the audit trap."

"Because Dad told me Halcyon was dirty and Mom was being manipulated by Derek."

"Did you know the documents were supposed to point to Helen?"

"I knew they pointed to her. I thought that was where the evidence went."

"You wrote 'Let her find Halcyon.'"

Graham stared at me.

"Where did you see that?"

"Answer."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Dad said if the audit came from you, the board would trust it."

I felt sick.

"So you were willing to use my reputation to accuse your mother."

"I thought the evidence was real."

"You did not ask her."

"Dad said she was confused."

"You believed the man who controlled her finances and spoke for her."

"He is my father."

"And she is your mother."

That shut him up.

I stood.

"We're done."

Graham stood too.

"No."

He reached into his coat.

Naomi moved immediately.

"Hands where I can see them."

Graham froze.

Slowly, he removed a paper envelope.

"This is the proof."

He placed it on the pew.

Naomi took it first.

Inside were photocopies of Daniel Ward's handwritten notes from the days after my father's crash.

One line named Derek.

DEREK FOLLOWED REYES AGAIN. MARTIN ANGRY HE LOST CONTROL OF SITUATION.

Another line said:

BLACK CAR WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO TOUCH HIM.

I read it twice.

"Not supposed to touch him."

Graham nodded.

"Dad wanted to scare your father."

"You know that how?"

"Daniel told me years later."

"When?"

"Before he died."

"Why would he tell you?"

"Because he hated what Dad turned us into."

I stared at the page.

"Who drove the black car?"

Graham pointed to another note.

INITIALS: M.M.

Martin Mercer.

My heart pounded.

"He drove it himself?"

"I don't know."

Naomi examined the copy.

"Initials are not proof of a driver."

Graham nodded.

"There is an original."

"Where?"

"Daniel's storage files."

"Where are they?"

"Derek knows."

I looked at Graham.

"Why does Derek know?"

"Because after Daniel died, Derek emptied his uncle's office before Dad could get there."

The missing original evidence had been in Derek's reach for fourteen years.

He had never mentioned it.

Graham looked at me with exhausted satisfaction.

"Now do you understand?"

I did not understand enough.

But I understood one thing.

Derek had not simply omitted his own wrongdoing.

May you like

He had hidden the location of evidence that might identify who caused my father's crash.

And he had done it while asking me to trust his version of the past.
