Chapter 5: A Different Kind of Home

Six months later, the Hargrove penthouse stood empty.
The expensive furniture remained untouched.
The crystal chandelier still sparkled.
But the house had become nothing more than a monument to loneliness.
Richard lived there by himself.
His cane stayed locked inside a closet he never opened again.
Across town, Catherine and Lily moved into a modest lakeside home filled with sunlight instead of fear.
There were no servants.
No marble hallways.
No shouting.
Only quiet breakfasts, bedtime stories, laughter, and healing.
One Saturday morning, Lily planted a small white rose beneath an oak tree in the garden.
"For the baby," she whispered.
Catherine knelt beside her daughter and wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
"They'll always be part of us."
Lily leaned against her mother's side.
"Are we finally safe?"
Catherine looked toward the bright morning sky.
Then she smiled—a real smile she had not worn in years.
"Yes."
And for the first time since that terrible day in the hallway, the word was true.
The home they lost had been built with money.
