Chapter 3: The Woman He Could Never Reach Again

One week later...
Nathan stood outside Sterling Manor.
Rain poured across the iron gates.
Two security guards blocked the entrance.
"I just need five minutes."
"Please."
"I want to apologize."
One guard spoke calmly.
"Mrs. Sterling instructed us not to let you inside."
Nathan lowered his head.
"I deserve that."
At that moment...
A black limousine rolled toward the gate.
Nathan looked up.
Evelyn sat inside.
Elegant.
Confident.
Wearing a charcoal business suit instead of a wedding dress.
She glanced toward him.
Their eyes met.
For only a second.
Nathan stepped forward.
"Evelyn..."
The limousine stopped.
The rear window lowered halfway.
Nathan's voice broke.
"I loved you."
Evelyn smiled sadly.
"No."
"You loved what I made possible."
"When that disappeared..."
"So did you."
Nathan opened his mouth.
No words came.
She continued softly.
"The woman who waited for you in a wedding dress died the night you left for Camille."
"The woman sitting here..."
"...belongs only to herself."
The window rose.
The limousine drove through the gates.
Nathan remained standing in the rain.
Watching the only person who had ever truly believed in him disappear forever.
Months later...
Sterling Global announced its largest international acquisition.
Chairwoman Evelyn Sterling appeared on magazine covers around the world.
Her speech ended with one sentence that became famous across the business world:
"Never underestimate the quiet person holding the door open for you."
"One day..."
"They may decide to close it."
Nathan watched the interview alone in a small rented apartment.
He turned off the television.
For the first time...
Silence was all he owned.
The End.
