Chapter 2: Grant Learns What He Lost

Three months later.
Grant Whitaker sat alone in a small apartment overlooking a parking lot.
The mansion was gone.
The wedding was gone.
Savannah was gone.
Most of his friends were gone too.
Without wealth and status, many relationships disappeared overnight.
The silence was unbearable.
One afternoon he received a letter.
Not from a lawyer.
Not from a bank.
From Emily.
Inside was a simple invitation.
Family Day.
Saturday.
No expectations.
No promises.
Just an opportunity.
Grant arrived nervous.
The triplets were playing soccer in the yard.
He stood frozen at the gate.
Mason noticed him first.
"Mom!"
The little boy pointed.
Emily walked outside.
For a moment neither spoke.
Finally Grant looked at the children.
"They're beautiful."
Emily nodded.
"They are."
Tears filled his eyes.
"I missed everything."
First words.
First steps.
First birthdays.
Three entire lives.
Gone.
Not because Emily kept them from him.
Because his choices created the distance.
Owen slowly approached.
"Are you really our dad?"
Grant knelt.
His voice cracked.
"Yes."
The boy considered that answer seriously.
Then handed him a soccer ball.
"Wanna play?"
Grant laughed through tears.
The children didn't care about money.
They didn't care about scandals.
They only cared whether he showed up.
And for the first time in his life, Grant understood that being a father was not a title.

It was a decision.
One he would have to earn every day.
