CHAPTER 3: The Search

The search took nearly two years.

The bakery had changed owners.

Old records had disappeared.

Most people barely remembered the woman.

Then one rainy afternoon, an elderly customer recognized a photograph Emma carried.

"I know her," the man said quietly.

"She used to volunteer at the community shelter."

Emma's heart raced.

The trail eventually led her to a small apartment building on the edge of town.

When Emma knocked, a frail elderly woman slowly opened the door.

Her hair was silver now.

Her hands trembled slightly.

But Emma recognized the same warm eyes immediately.

The woman looked confused.

"Can I help you?"

Emma couldn't speak for a moment.

Instead, she reached into her purse and carefully unfolded the old note.

The woman's eyes widened.

Then tears filled them.

"You kept it?" she whispered.

"For twenty years," Emma replied.

The woman covered her mouth.

Neither of them noticed the rain outside anymore.

For several minutes they simply stood there, staring at one another.

One life had touched another.

And now the circle was closing.

But Emma soon discovered something heartbreaking.

The woman who had once helped so many people was now struggling herself.

Medical bills had drained her savings.

She lived alone.

And she had nobody left to care for her.

Emma knew exactly what she needed to do.
