Chapter 2: The Coins That Changed Everything
Chapter 2: The Coins That Changed Everything
For several long seconds, no one moved.
Traffic slowed.
Drivers who had been honking moments earlier stepped out of their cars.
One elderly man quietly walked into the street and began picking up the scattered coins.
Then another person joined him.
Within seconds, strangers were gathering every coin they could find.
The little boy struggled to sit up, wincing as blood dripped from his scraped palms.
"I... I can do it," he whispered.
The wealthy woman knelt beside him for the first time.
Up close, she noticed how thin he was.
His cheeks were hollow.
His hoodie smelled of rain and cold nights.
His bare feet were covered with fresh cuts and old scars.
"What is your name?" she asked softly.
"Ethan."
"Where are your parents?"
The boy lowered his eyes.
"My mom died last winter."
"And your dad?"
"I don't know who he is."
Silence settled between them.
The woman felt a sharp ache in her chest.
She looked down at the luxury stroller... then at the child who had nearly sacrificed his life to save her daughter.
Without hesitation, she removed her expensive coat and wrapped it around Ethan's trembling shoulders.
"I am so sorry."
He blinked in surprise.
"For kicking your cup."
"For not seeing you."
"For making you think those coins mattered more than your life."
Ethan smiled weakly.
"They did."
"They were dinner."
Tears welled in the woman's eyes.
She had spent hundreds of dollars on lunch that afternoon.
This child had risked everything for less than five dollars.
She carefully picked him up.
"Come with me."
"I'll buy you something to eat."
Ethan hesitated.
"Really?"
She nodded.
"No child should ever have to choose between food... and saving a life."
