Sophie stood once again inside a ballroom.

Evelyn watched proudly from the front row.
When Sophie stepped onto the stage, she looked at hundreds of strangers and smiled.
"My mommy taught me something."
She paused.
"Real family isn't the people who hurt you."
"It's the people who protect you."
The audience rose to its feet.
A standing ovation filled the room.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
