Chapter 5: A Different Kind of Family

One year later...

Sophie stood once again inside a ballroom.

This time...

There were no accusations.

No shouting.

No fear.

She wore another white dress.

Not as a flower girl.

As the guest of honor at a charity gala raising money for children affected by domestic violence.

The small scar near her hairline had faded.

Her smile had returned.

Evelyn watched proudly from the front row.

When Sophie stepped onto the stage, she looked at hundreds of strangers and smiled.

"My mommy taught me something."

She paused.

"Real family isn't the people who hurt you."

"It's the people who protect you."

The audience rose to its feet.

A standing ovation filled the room.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

For years, she had believed losing her family would destroy her.

Instead...

It saved her.

Outside the ballroom, photographers captured a mother and daughter walking into the sunlight together.

Behind them...

The past remained where it belonged.

And ahead of them...

May you like

For the first time...

There was nothing left to fear.
