Chapter 2: The Family Falls Apart

As officers escorted Preston toward the ballroom doors, he twisted violently.
"This is her fault!"
He pointed at Evelyn.
"She ruined everything!"
"No," Officer Brooks replied.
"You ruined your own wedding."
The bride quietly removed her wedding ring.
Without saying a single word...
She placed it into Preston's hand.
"I'm done."
She walked away.
The ballroom parted for her.
Behind her...
Evelyn's mother rushed toward the officers.
"There must be some misunderstanding."
"My son would never hurt a child."
Officer Brooks faced her.
"You watched him do it."
"And you blamed the victim."
She couldn't answer.
For the first time in years...
Her perfect image offered no protection.
Then another voice interrupted.
The hotel manager stepped forward carrying a folder.
"There is one more thing."
He handed several printed invoices to the police.
"During our internal review, accounting discovered forged charity reimbursements connected to Mr. Preston Whitmore."
Thousands of dollars.
Fake vendors.
Personal luxury purchases.
Money stolen from charity events over three years.
The detectives exchanged glances.
One investigation had just become several.
Guests quietly picked up their phones.
Some left.
Others deleted business contacts.
Sponsors canceled donations before leaving the ballroom.
The Whitmore name, once respected across Chicago...
Collapsed in a single evening.
Meanwhile...
Across town...
Sophie finally opened her eyes inside the hospital.
She smiled weakly.
"Mommy..."
"Did I do something wrong?"
Evelyn kissed her forehead.
"No, sweetheart."
"You told the truth."
"And the truth finally found its voice."
