Chapter 1: The Camera Never Lies

The ballroom doors burst open just as the first police officers arrived.
An ambulance crew rushed toward Sophie while Evelyn refused to let anyone else carry her daughter.
"She stays with me," she said, her voice calm despite the blood covering her hands.
One officer looked at Preston.
"What happened here?"
Before Preston could answer, his mother stepped forward.
"My granddaughter stole my son's phone," she explained smoothly. "Things got... emotional."
The officer frowned.
"Did this man strike the child?"
"It was an accident," Preston interrupted quickly.
"He was defending himself," Evelyn's father added.
Every lie came effortlessly.
As though they had rehearsed it.
Evelyn looked toward the ballroom entrance.
Above the doors...
The tiny red light on the security camera continued blinking.
She pointed.
"I'd like the footage."
Preston's face stiffened.
"The cameras probably don't work."
The hotel manager, who had remained silent until now, finally stepped forward.
"They do."
The room fell silent.
"Our security system records continuously."
Preston forced a laugh.
"Then let's watch it."
But for the first time that evening...
His confidence looked forced.
Minutes later everyone gathered inside the hotel's security office.
The recording began.
Guests watched Preston announce his missing phone.
Then they watched him walk toward Sophie's chair.
The video zoomed automatically.
Every eye widened.
Preston looked around...
Made sure no one was watching...
Then quietly slipped his titanium phone into the pocket of Sophie's denim jacket.
Gasps filled the room.
The recording continued.
Sophie never touched him.
Never approached the head table.
Never even noticed.
Then came the final moment.
Preston ripped the oak menu board from its stand...
Raised it over his shoulder...
And deliberately struck an eight-year-old child.
No one could call it an accident.
No one.
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Then handcuffs clicked shut around Preston's wrists.
His smile disappeared forever.
