CHAPTER 1: ON HER KNEES

Adrian Vale twisted Evelyn Hart’s wrist until pain shot through her arm.

Her knees struck the marble floor.

A few guests gasped, but no one moved.

The ballroom of the Ashford Grand was filled with senators, CEOs, judges, and heirs whose families had controlled the city for generations. They had all seen Adrian hurt her.

They simply valued his money more than her safety.

Adrian kept one hand wrapped around her wrist while lifting his champagne with the other.

“Look at her,” he told the guests. “The great Evelyn Hart. Heiress to a billion-dollar empire, yet she can’t even stand without embarrassing herself.”

Nervous laughter moved through the ballroom.

Evelyn’s silver gown pooled around her knees. Her fingers trembled, but she refused to give Adrian the tears he wanted.

He leaned closer.

“You thought you could challenge me tonight?”

Evelyn slowly raised her eyes.

There was no fear in them.

Only calculation.

Adrian’s smile weakened.

For the past three years, he had controlled her bank accounts, isolated her from friends, dismissed loyal employees, and convinced the board that she was emotionally unstable.

Tonight, he believed he was finishing the job.

He had no idea Evelyn had chosen this ballroom for a reason.

No idea every word he spoke was being transmitted through the diamond pin fastened beneath her collar.

No idea the emergency exit had been unlocked exactly twelve minutes earlier.

Evelyn looked past him toward the enormous oak doors.

Adrian followed her gaze.

“What are you looking at?”

She drew a slow breath.

“The mistake you made,” she whispered.

His fingers tightened.

“What mistake?”

Evelyn’s expression remained perfectly calm.

“You believed those doors were keeping me in.”

A heavy impact shook the ballroom.

Every conversation stopped.

Adrian turned just as the oak doors slammed open.

A tall man in a black suit walked through them, followed by state investigators and armed security officers.

Roman Hart—Evelyn’s older brother—had been gone for six years.

Adrian stared as though he were looking at a ghost.

Roman’s eyes dropped to Evelyn kneeling on the floor.

Then they lifted to Adrian.

“Take your hand off my sister.”

Adrian shoved Evelyn aside and charged him.

Roman stepped forward.

One controlled strike sent Adrian crashing backward into a row of chairs. His nose split against the polished wood, and the fake confidence vanished from his face.

For the first time that night, Adrian looked truly terrified.

But as officers moved toward him, he began to laugh.

“You think this is over?” he asked through the blood.

May you like

Then he looked directly at Evelyn.

“Ask your brother where he was the night your father died.”
