Chapter 3: The Price of Humiliation

Ethan stared at his father.
"Dad..."
"Tell them this is fake."
Richard couldn't speak.
For the first time in his life...
...Ethan looked frightened.
Matteo finally stepped closer.
Not aggressively.
Not loudly.
Just close enough that Ethan understood exactly who stood before him.
"My wife works two jobs."
"She never complains."
"She still apologizes when other people hurt her."
"You mistook kindness for weakness."
Ethan swallowed.
"I..."
"You recorded her humiliation."
Matteo glanced toward the guests.
"So did many of you."
No one moved.
"Good."
"Keep every recording."
People looked at each other in confusion.
Matteo turned toward his legal counsel, who had quietly entered the ballroom moments earlier.
"I want every video preserved."
"Civil assault."
"False imprisonment."
"Intentional humiliation."
"Emotional damages."
"And every employee who abandoned her after witnessing it."
The hotel manager nearly collapsed.
Richard stepped forward.
"We can settle this."
Matteo looked directly into his eyes.
"You had that opportunity..."
"...before your son touched my wife."
Security officers entered the ballroom.
Not to protect Matteo.
To escort Ethan away after several guests finally admitted what they had witnessed.
The phones that had once recorded Anna's humiliation...
...were now recording Ethan leaving in disgrace.
Anna stood silently beside Matteo.
She wasn't smiling.
She wasn't celebrating.
She simply rested her head against his shoulder.
For the first time that night...
...she felt safe again.
