Chapter 2: Choosing His Family

The husband walked back into the kitchen.

He rolled up his sleeves.

Then he turned on the faucet.

Everyone stared in disbelief.

"What are you doing?" his mother demanded.

He picked up the first dirty plate.

"I'm cleaning."

His sister laughed.

"You're embarrassing yourself."

"No."

He washed another dish.

"I'm embarrassing everyone who watched an eight-month pregnant woman do this alone."

The room fell silent again.

His wife quietly wiped away her tears.

He continued washing every plate.

Every pan.

Every greasy pot.

Not because he had to.

Because he wanted everyone watching to understand exactly how badly they had failed her.

When the sink was finally empty, he dried his hands.

Then he faced his family.

"I've spent years believing this house was filled with people who loved each other."

He looked at each one of them.

"Tonight I realized my wife has been living here completely alone."

His mother tried to interrupt.

"You've changed since you married her."

He nodded.

May you like

"You're right."

"I learned what real family looks like."
