Chapter 1: The Second Page

The church remained frozen.
Even the priest lowered his head as Mr. Halden continued reading.
"My mother, Margaret Ellis, shall serve as the sole executor of my estate until every condition in this document has been fulfilled."
Evan's jaw tightened.
"What conditions?" he demanded.
Mr. Halden calmly turned to the second page.
"My husband, Evan Ellis, shall receive nothing—not one dollar, not one property, not one share of my company—unless he can prove that he had no involvement, direct or indirect, in the events leading to my death."
A wave of whispers swept through the church.
Celeste's confident smile disappeared.
Evan forced a laugh.
"This is ridiculous."
Mr. Halden ignored him.
"My attorney has been instructed to release the contents of a secure digital archive to the police immediately after this reading."
Margaret slowly looked toward the attorney.
"You knew?"
Mr. Halden nodded.
"Emma prepared everything three weeks before she died."
Evan suddenly took a step forward.
"What archive?"
Without answering, Mr. Halden handed a small black flash drive to the detective waiting quietly near the altar.
The detective accepted it without a word.
Then he looked directly at Evan.
"Mr. Ellis... we'd appreciate it if you remained in town."
For the first time since entering the church...
Evan looked genuinely afraid.
