Chapter 15 - Clarissa Disappears

The burner phone was found inside the handbag of Sofia's private nurse.

Her name was Mara Kent.

She had been hired by the care facility six months earlier through an agency that did not exist.

By sunrise, Daniel's investigators had enough to prove the agency was connected to a Bellandi intermediary.

Mara insisted she had never hurt Sofia.

She said Carlo paid her only to report visitors, medical changes, and any attempt to move Sofia from the facility.

Lucia wanted to believe the distinction mattered.

Daniel reminded her that paid surveillance of a disabled patient was still evidence of coercion.

Mara had used Sofia's name when contacting Vincent Rota because Carlo believed the name would frighten older Moretti associates into obedience.

It had worked.

Vincent admitted he had helped conceal small financial transfers for years.

He also admitted Carlo knew Helena kept records in her study.

But he denied knowing anything about the sedative.

By eight in the morning, the conspiracy seemed larger and somehow less clear.

Every new participant claimed to be guilty of only the smaller betrayal.

Salvatore opened doors but did not drug Helena.

Mara watched Sofia but did not hurt her.

Vincent moved money but did not know where it went.

Emilio signed invoices but did not know who benefited.

Clarissa infiltrated the family but claimed she later tried to protect it.

Carlo was the only person everyone pointed toward.

Carlo was also the only person no one could find.

Lucia began to understand why Helena had spent months building a paper trail instead of confronting him.

A family could lie in chorus.

Documents did not care who was offended.

At nine fifteen, Daniel entered the hospital conference room carrying a tablet.

"We have a problem."

Lucia looked up.

"That sentence is becoming meaningless."

"Clarissa is gone."

Emilio stood.

"What?"

"Her protective apartment is empty."

"How?"

"The agent outside the unit received a call that she was being transferred to this hospital."

"From whom?"

"A spoofed federal number."

"And he just let her leave?"

Daniel's eyes hardened.

"She was picked up by a vehicle with cloned credentials."

Lucia's stomach tightened.

"Carlo."

"Possibly."

Emilio was already reaching for his coat.

Daniel blocked the door.

"Sit down."

"Get out of my way."

"Sit down."

"She could be in danger."

"Which is why the least useful thing right now is you driving around the city angry."

Emilio's face reddened.

"You do not know her."

Daniel looked at him.

"Neither did you."

Emilio moved toward him.

Giovanni stepped between them with his uninjured arm.

"Enough."

Emilio stared at his father.

"You do not care what happens to her."

"I care what happens to you."

"That has always meant the same thing as control."

Giovanni flinched.

Daniel noticed.

Lucia noticed Daniel noticing.

This family had become a room full of exposed wires.

Marco entered.

"We found the vehicle."

Everyone turned.

"Where?"

"Abandoned near the river."

"Clarissa?"

"No sign of her."

"Blood?"

"No."

Emilio exhaled.

Marco continued.

"But a traffic camera caught another car leaving the area two minutes later."

He placed a still image on the screen.

Lucia stared.

The license plate belonged to Emilio's sedan.

Every head turned toward him.

Emilio's face went blank.

"No."

Daniel folded his arms.

"That is your car."

"It was at the estate."

Marco looked at him.

"Was it?"

"Yes."

"Who had the keys?"

Emilio stopped.

Lucia closed her eyes.

"Emilio."

He rubbed his face.

"I went out last night."

Giovanni's expression darkened.

"Where?"

"To see Clarissa."

"After she was placed under protection."

"Yes."

Daniel's voice became dangerously calm.

"You interfered with a protected witness."

"I spoke to my girlfriend."

Clarissa's absence had apparently not yet changed his grammar.

"How did you get in?"

"She came down."

"Why?"

"She wanted to see her mother."

Lucia stared at him.

"You brought her to the hospital."

Emilio nodded.

"Through the private garage."

Daniel looked as if he might arrest him personally.

"Without telling anyone."

"Sofia is her mother."

"Sofia is a protected witness."

"She is also a human being."

Daniel paused.

The point was inconveniently true.

"What happened in the room?"

Emilio looked at Clarissa's empty chair.

"Sofia recognized her."

Lucia softened despite herself.

"Could she speak?"

"A little."

"What did she say?"

"Clarissa."

Emilio swallowed.

"She said Clarissa's name."

No one spoke for a moment.

"Then she said another word."

Lucia leaned forward.

"What word?"

"Nine."

Daniel frowned.

"Nine?"

"She kept repeating it."

"Anything else?"

"Dock."

Marco's expression changed.

"Dock nine."

Emilio nodded.

"Clarissa thought so."

Lucia looked at him.

"Which dock?"

"She did not know."

"And then?"

Emilio looked ashamed.

"I took her back toward the apartment."

"Toward?"

"She asked me to stop at a gas station."

"You let her out."

"Yes."

"And?"

"She got into another car."

Lucia stood.

"You watched her disappear?"

"She said she was meeting Daniel's people."

Daniel stared at him.

"She lied."

"I know that now."

Lucia laughed in disbelief.

"How many times can one man learn the same lesson?"

Emilio looked at her.

"Apparently more than seventeen."

The reference to Helena's calls was so cruel toward himself that Lucia stopped.

Emilio sat down.

"I am trying."

"Trying what?"

"Not to be the man everyone knows I am."

Lucia had no answer for that.

Marco began searching property records for every warehouse, terminal, and pier associated with the number nine.

There were dozens.

Daniel's team narrowed them using Bellandi links.

Three remained.

One was abandoned.

One was under active federal observation in another case.

The third was Warehouse Nine at an old Moretti Maritime pier scheduled for demolition.

Lucia stared at the address.

"Mother owned it."

Martin nodded.

"Through the company."

"Who had access?"

"Operations, security, and senior family executives."

"Including Carlo."

"Until last year."

Marco checked the electronic logs.

"Someone entered at five twelve this morning."

Emilio stood again.

"We go now."

Daniel pointed at him.

"You go nowhere without an agent attached to you."

"Fine."

"That was not permission."

"I heard the first part."

Daniel looked at Lucia.

"Is he always like this?"

"He used to be worse."

Emilio almost smiled.

The team reached Warehouse Nine shortly before noon.

The building stood beside gray water behind rusted fencing and stacked concrete barriers.

Agents entered first.

The main floor was empty.

A chair sat beneath a hanging work light.

A phone rested on the seat.

Lucia recognized Clarissa's case.

No Clarissa.

No Carlo.

The phone was playing a voice memo on a loop.

Daniel stopped everyone from touching it until technicians cleared the device.

Then they played the message.

Clarissa's voice filled the warehouse.

"Lucia, if you hear this, I found what my mother was trying to tell me."

A pause.

"Dock Nine is not a place."

Lucia frowned.

Clarissa continued.

"It is the ninth line in Helena's ledger under the dock accounts."

Lucia's heart accelerated.

Marco opened a scanned copy of the ledger.

He counted.

The ninth line contained a company name.

SERRANO RESTORATION FUND.

Lucia stared.

"The bishop?"

Daniel's face hardened.

The recording continued.

"Do not trust the name."

"Helena did not."

"That is why she hid the last video there."

Lucia looked at Daniel.

"Last video?"

Clarissa's voice dropped.

"Carlo knows about it now."

A sound interrupted the recording.

A door slammed somewhere near Clarissa.

She whispered one final sentence.

"If he gets to Bishop Serrano before you do, Helena's last proof disappears with him."

The warehouse recording ended, but Emilio kept staring at the phone on the chair.

"She went after him alone."

Daniel looked at him.

"She went after evidence."

"Same thing."

"No."

Daniel's voice was firm.

"That distinction is why people survive investigations."

Emilio turned away.

Lucia walked to the windows facing the river.

The old pier had once belonged to Helena's father.

As children, Lucia and Emilio had been forbidden from playing there because the floorboards were unstable.

Emilio had taken her anyway.

He had held her hand while they crossed the dangerous sections.

She had forgotten that memory until now.

It irritated her.

She wanted the past to arrange itself neatly into warnings she had missed.

Instead, it kept producing evidence that Emilio had once been generous, Clarissa had once been afraid, Giovanni had once been wrong for reasons that looked like love, and Helena had once failed to save people she loved despite seeing more clearly than all of them.

"What is the Serrano Restoration Fund?" Emilio asked.

Martin opened the company archive.

"A restricted charitable account used for cathedral restoration."

"Why would Mother hide anything there?"

Lucia turned from the window.

"Because no one in this family voluntarily opens charity accounting."

Emilio almost smiled.

"Fair."

Daniel looked at the ledger scan.

"The ninth line lists a donor reference."

Marco enlarged it.

H.M.-1146.

Lucia stared at the numbers.

"Eleven forty-six."

"A time?" Marco asked.

Lucia remembered Helena's bedroom routines.

Her mother usually turned off the television before midnight and read in silence.

"Maybe."

Daniel looked at the date column.

The entry had been created the night before Helena collapsed.

"Then the video may not be a summary."

Lucia's chest tightened.

"It may be the night itself."

Emilio went pale.

For days they had hunted documents explaining Helena's death after it happened.

Now they might be about to watch the moment someone caused it.

Lucia picked up Clarissa's phone.

"We go to Serrano now."

Daniel nodded.

Emilio stepped forward.

"I am coming."

Lucia looked at him.

"If you come, you do exactly what Daniel says."

Emilio stared at his half-brother.

"That may be the cruelest condition you have imposed so far."

Daniel did not smile.

"Good."

The joke died, but the fear remained.

Outside the warehouse, sirens moved closer along the river road.

Lucia looked back once at the empty chair beneath the work light.

Clarissa had left them a path.

Whether it was a rescue signal or one more manipulation was still impossible to know.

Marco recovered a second detail from Clarissa's abandoned phone before they left Warehouse Nine.

A photograph had been taken seven minutes before the voice memo.

It showed the ledger page listing the Serrano Restoration Fund beside a reflection in a cracked office window.

Lucia enlarged the reflection.

A man stood behind Clarissa.

Only part of his face was visible.

Emilio recognized him immediately.

"Adrian Cross."

Daniel looked at the timestamp.

"Then Cross knew she found the archive reference."

Lucia stared at the image.

"And if Cross knew, Carlo knew."

Marco nodded.

"Which means we are no longer racing Clarissa."

"We are racing whoever is following her."

Lucia looked toward the river road.

The urgency changed instantly.

Finding Helena's last video was no longer only about proving what happened.

May you like

It might be the only way to reach Clarissa before Carlo decided she had become another piece of evidence to erase.
