Chapter 1: The Phone That Changed Everything
Claire calmly unlocked the encrypted phone.
A single fingerprint.
One secure connection.
One command.
The screen displayed a live feed from every room inside the Whitaker estate.
Patricia frowned.
"How are you doing that?"
Claire didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she pressed another icon.
The television mounted above the fireplace suddenly flickered to life.
Footage filled the screen.
Yesterday afternoon.
The same kitchen.
Avery laughing while deliberately spilling wine on a housekeeper before blaming her for damaging an antique rug.
Another clip followed.
Warren instructing the accounting manager to move millions of dollars through shell companies before the quarterly audit.
Then another.
Graham threatening a contractor who refused to falsify safety reports.
Silence settled over the room.
The confident smiles disappeared.
"You hacked us," Graham growled.
Claire finally looked at him.
"No."
She smiled faintly.
"I investigated you."
Patricia slowly set down her teacup.
"You've been spying on this family?"
"For eleven months."
Graham's face turned pale.
"What are you talking about?"
Claire folded her hands.
"I never accepted your proposal because I was in love."
Every heartbeat inside the kitchen seemed to stop.
"I accepted because the Whitaker family became the primary target of an ongoing federal investigation."
Avery stared at her.
"No..."
Claire nodded.
"My real employer isn't the consulting firm you thought I owned."
She slid an identification badge across the marble countertop.
It carried a government seal.
"My name is Claire Bennett."
May you like
"Senior Director of Financial Crime Investigations."
"And this marriage was the final step in gathering evidence."
