Chapter 2: The Thing Inside

The wife stepped forward again.

This time, she didn’t hesitate.

She pulled the mattress seam wider.

What she saw made her freeze completely.

Inside the hollowed mattress was not just empty space—but a concealed compartment lined with old plastic sheets and metal reinforcements.

And inside it…

A locked, rusted storage box.

Scratched. Dent marks everywhere.

Like it had been moved… often.

The husband rushed forward.

“No—stop—”

But it was too late.

The wife grabbed the edge of the box and pulled.

It resisted for a moment… then gave way with a heavy, dry crack.

The lid shifted open slightly.

A smell rose instantly—rotting, stale, wrong.

The wife staggered back, covering her mouth.

Inside the box were faded documents… and something worse:

Old hospital tags.

Child identification bands.

And a small, broken baby bracelet.

Her eyes slowly lifted to the husband.

“You told me there was no one else,” she whispered.

The husband’s face tightened, breaking for the first time.

“I didn’t lie,” he said.

“I erased it.”
