Chapter 2: The Truth Buried Six Years Ago

Logan ordered the gala to end immediately.

Guests left in stunned silence, their whispered conversations already spreading through the city.

Inside a private conference room at the hotel, only four people remained.

Logan.

Vanessa.

Marina.

And Noah, still refusing to let go of Marina's hand.

"I want answers," Logan said.

Marina looked exhausted.

"I never abandoned Noah."

Vanessa laughed.

"Don't listen to this woman."

But Logan wasn't looking at his wife anymore.

He was looking at Noah.

The boy hadn't released Marina's hand once.

Marina slowly reached into her worn handbag.

"I kept these because I hoped... one day... someone would believe me."

She placed a thick envelope on the table.

Hospital records.

Birth certificates.

DNA reports.

Employment files.

Court petitions.

Photographs.

Thousands of messages.

Letters she had written.

Every single one returned unopened.

Logan opened the first document.

His heartbeat stopped.

Mother: Marina Ellis.

He opened another.

A DNA report.

Probability of maternity:

99.9999%.

His hands began to shake.

Vanessa finally lost her composure.

"Those papers are fake!"

Marina quietly slid one final document across the table.

A court order.

Filed six years earlier.

Petition denied because Logan Mercer had signed legal guardianship documents naming Vanessa as Noah's mother.

Logan stared at his own signature.

He remembered signing dozens of legal papers after Noah's premature birth.

He had trusted lawyers.

Trusted assistants.

Trusted Vanessa.

He had never read them.

"They told me my baby died," Marina whispered.

"They told me there had been complications."

She looked at Noah.

"But I knew he was alive."

Logan felt physically sick.

He turned slowly toward Vanessa.

"What..."

His voice cracked.

"...did you do?"

Vanessa said nothing.

Her silence answered everything.
