Chapter 15 - The Lowest Night

I had believed there was nothing Ryan's family could say that would shock me after New Year's.

April's statement proved me wrong.

For several minutes, I could not speak.

I pressed my palms over my stomach and listened to the quiet apartment.

Simone was washing dishes in the next room.

Outside, the city carried on as though nobody had threatened the most important part of my life.

I wanted to believe April had misunderstood.

I wanted to believe Brooke had made an awful joke that didn't reflect anyone's intentions.

But I couldn't dismiss it.

Evelyn sent the information to investigators, clearly identifying it as April's account rather than established fact.

Mara arranged to speak with her directly.

That distinction mattered.

A witness's memory could help reveal the truth, but it was not permission to invent what remained unknown.

The next morning, I received another frightening development.

The private lender connected to the Boulder house had begun demanding repayment from Grant's company.

Ryan's attorney suggested that my refusal to cooperate was putting the whole family at risk of financial ruin.

I read the sentence three times.

Then I finally understood what they thought I was.

Not a person.

Not a wife.

Not an expectant mother.

A line of credit with a heartbeat.

Their fortunes depended on my continuing to rescue them.

And when I stopped, they blamed me for the damage.

At a follow-up appointment, Dr. Park recommended additional support for the stress and trauma I was carrying.

I agreed to speak with a counselor.

It felt strange to accept help after years of being the person everyone else relied on.

That evening, alone in the apartment, I finally allowed myself to grieve the marriage I thought I had.

I remembered Ryan bringing me soup when I had the flu.

I remembered our wedding vows.

I remembered the way he cried when we heard the baby's heartbeat for the first time.

Were those moments false?

I didn't know.

Maybe some had been real.

Maybe that was what made betrayal so devastating.

The good memories hadn't protected me.

I cried until my throat hurt.

Then I slept for nearly six hours without waking.

When I opened my eyes, there was a message from Mara.

“We recovered additional footage from the New Year's event.”

I called her immediately.

“Brooke's original?”

“An additional recording from a preserved source.”

“Does it show what happened?”

“It includes events before the assault.”

“Then you can see the argument.”

“Yes.”

Mara paused.

“Claire, we also heard what Grant said before you came into the room.”

I sat upright.

“What did he say?”

May you like

“He told Ryan this was their last chance to make you sign.”
