Chapter 17 - The Counterattack

Rachel filed the appropriate responses to the threatened civil claims and asked the other side to preserve communications and records.

The bank provided investigators with additional merchant data connected to the emergency cards.

Margaret's team maintained heightened controls on any proposed trust distribution tied to the dispute.

Naomi continued following the evidence rather than the timetable my fear wanted to impose.

Then an unexpected witness approached her.

A junior employee of Family Recovery Services, Tessa Ward, said Chloe had instructed staff to prepare invoices for care-coordination sessions that had never taken place.

Tessa brought emails, draft billing schedules, and a calendar that listed Maya as a client before Maya had agreed to receive services.

In one message, Chloe wrote, Once the family court sees the incident history, the fees will look routine.

Investigators also obtained records showing that the so-called wellness report under Maya's socks originated as an editable template in Chloe's company's shared system.

The signature image had been inserted later.

The finding mattered because it linked the questioned document to an identifiable workflow.

Rachel explained that the full evidence still needed authentication and that courts would weigh it under applicable procedures.

I finally felt the plan shifting away from Eleanor's preferred arena of insinuation.

She could describe Maya as fragile.

She could describe me as difficult.

But she could not easily explain why an unsigned template had acquired my signature or why nonexistent sessions were prepared for billing.

When Eleanor learned that her company's records were under scrutiny, she appeared at the rental building without warning.

Our building manager called rather than admitting her.

I stayed inside with Maya and Liam while Rachel spoke to Eleanor's attorney.

Security footage showed my mother standing in the lobby with a small gift bag.

She looked toward the camera for a long moment.

This time I did not go down.

This time I did not give her a scene.

She left the bag at reception.

Inside was a knitted blue sweater for Liam and a note in her familiar handwriting.

You can end this whenever you choose.

There was no apology.

There was no question about whether Liam had recovered.

The sentence meant only that she still expected obedience.

I gave the note to Rachel and placed the sweater in a sealed bag with the other unsolicited items.

That evening, Maya asked whether I missed my mother.

"The person I thought she was," I said.

May you like

"Every day."
