Chapter 13 - THE VAULT

Keene's pistol pointed directly at Abigail's chest.

Warren kept his weapon trained on Caleb.

The steel vault door stood between them like the center of everything that had gone wrong.

"Put the medical bag down," Keene said.

Abigail obeyed slowly.

"Kick it away."

She nudged it across the wet concrete.

Caleb did not look at her.

His eyes stayed on Warren.

"Lucas is alive," Abigail said.

Keene's mouth tightened.

"For the moment."

Caleb's expression changed.

"Careful."

Keene almost laughed.

"You still think threats impress me?"

"That wasn't a threat."

"Then what was it?"

"Advice."

Warren shifted his weight.

"Can we finish this?"

Keene ignored him.

"You always were impatient, Daniel."

Warren's jaw tightened.

Abigail noticed the tension.

The two men were standing together.

They were not united.

That mattered.

"Where's Dane?" Caleb asked.

Keene's gaze flicked toward the tunnel.

"Gone."

"You let him run?"

"Victor knows when a situation has become inefficient."

Warren looked sharply at Keene.

"You said he was securing the exit."

Keene gave him a flat glance.

"Did I?"

Warren's face changed.

For the first time, Abigail saw what Ethan had seen hours earlier.

The moment when a loyal subordinate realized he had always been disposable.

Caleb saw it too.

"Daniel."

Warren snapped his attention back to him.

"Shut up."

"He's leaving you."

"Shut up."

"Dane's gone."

"I said shut up."

"Keene has a clean uniform and an admiral's retirement waiting for him."

Warren's gun trembled.

"You have attempted kidnapping, armed coercion, assault, and probably murder tied to your name."

Keene interrupted.

"Do not listen to him."

Caleb smiled faintly.

"There it is."

Warren looked at Keene.

"What happens after we open the vault?"

Keene did not answer quickly enough.

Warren's face went pale.

"What happens to me?"

"Daniel."

"Answer me."

Keene's voice became colder.

"You are emotional."

Warren laughed.

"Emotional?"

"Lower your voice."

"I put a gun in a hospital because you told me that report could destroy everything."

Abigail felt Caleb's eyes shift toward her for one second.

Warren had just admitted it.

If Ruiz's agents were close enough, they might have heard.

Keene realized the same thing.

"Stop talking."

Warren took one step away from him.

"You said the boys would take the fall."

"Daniel."

"You said Shaw would disappear with the evidence."

Abigail's pulse jumped.

Raymond Shaw.

Keene's eyes hardened.

"You are making this worse."

"For who?"

Warren's breathing quickened.

"For me?"

Caleb spoke quietly.

"Keep going."

Keene swung his gun toward Caleb.

"One more word and I shoot him."

Abigail stepped forward without thinking.

Keene immediately turned the weapon back toward her.

Caleb's voice became sharp.

"Abby, stop."

She stopped.

Warren looked between them.

"She really is the pressure point."

Caleb's face went still.

Keene smiled.

"Now you understand."

He reached into his coat and removed the steel key marked ZERO.

"This opens the first lock."

He tossed it at Caleb's feet.

Then he looked at Abigail.

"The second key is with Nathan Cross's son."

Abigail's stomach dropped.

"Aaron?"

"Mr. Pike was surprisingly difficult to kill."

"You knew he escaped."

"Of course."

Keene raised the pistol slightly.

"Which is why he will bring the key to us."

Caleb shook his head.

"He won't."

"He already has."

Footsteps sounded behind Abigail.

She turned.

Aaron Pike appeared at the tunnel entrance.

His face was pale from blood loss and exhaustion.

Ruiz stood behind him with his weapon drawn.

Abigail almost smiled.

Then she saw another gun pressed beneath Ruiz's jaw.

Victor Dane stood behind him.

"Everybody relax," Dane said.

Ruiz's expression promised violence if given half a chance.

Dane shoved him forward.

Pike held the brass key in one hand.

Keene smiled.

"Excellent."

Caleb looked at Pike.

"You shouldn't have come."

Pike stared at him.

"My father died because of that door."

"Your father died because of the men in this room."

Warren flinched.

Keene did not.

Pike stepped closer.

"Then let's finish what he started."

Dane kept his weapon on Ruiz.

"Open it."

Caleb looked at the vault.

Two locks sat side by side.

One accepted the steel key.

The second was smaller and older.

Pike's brass key fit it perfectly.

"Why me?" Caleb asked.

Keene sighed.

"Because Nathan was clever."

"That doesn't answer the question."

"He knew the archive would be seized if any one person could access it."

"So he changed the locks?"

"After he discovered what Dane was building."

Dane smiled.

"Building is a generous word."

"Blackmailing," Abigail said.

Dane looked at her.

"Information has value."

"So does human life."

"Not equally."

Caleb's jaw flexed.

Keene continued.

"Cross duplicated Anchor records and moved them here."

"How?"

"He had maintenance access."

Pike looked at the vault.

"My father created the vault?"

"No."

Keene smiled.

"He stole it from us."

The sentence confused Abigail.

Caleb understood first.

"Anchor wasn't stored here originally."

"Correct."

"Nathan moved it."

"And changed the access protocol."

Caleb looked at the steel key.

"Using my key."

"Your training key."

"Why mine?"

Keene's expression became almost amused.

"Because you were the only candidate Dane couldn't compromise."

Caleb said nothing.

"Every other person in your class gave him something usable."

Keene looked at Abigail.

"Financial crimes."

"Affairs."

"Addictions."

"Unauthorized operations."

"Family secrets."

He turned back to Caleb.

"You gave him nothing."

Caleb laughed softly.

"Everyone has something."

"Yes."

Keene looked at Abigail again.

"We simply hadn't found yours yet."

Abigail understood.

She was not merely Pressure Point One because she was Caleb's wife.

She was the first leverage they had ever found that worked.

Keene continued.

"Nathan knew your key would be the safest half of the access system because no one expected you to be connected to the archive."

Pike whispered, "Zero is the clean link."

Caleb looked at him.

The line from Nathan's letter finally made sense.

Ruiz spoke carefully.

"You realize none of this ends well for you."

Dane pressed the pistol harder beneath his jaw.

"You are not part of the conversation."

Ruiz smiled.

"I'm trying to save you paperwork."

Dane's eyes narrowed.

Abigail noticed Ruiz's right hand.

Two fingers were slowly tapping against his thigh.

Not random.

A signal.

Caleb noticed too.

Warren did not.

Keene pointed toward the vault.

"Open it."

Caleb bent and picked up the steel key.

Pike moved to the second lock.

They inserted both keys.

"Together," Keene said.

Caleb looked at Pike.

Pike nodded.

They turned.

Two heavy mechanisms clicked inside the door.

A green indicator light appeared.

Caleb pulled the handle.

The vault opened.

Inside were rows of sealed document boxes.

Hard drives.

Old tapes.

Photographs.

Personnel files.

Decades of secrets.

Dane inhaled like a man seeing treasure.

Keene stepped forward.

"At last."

Caleb blocked him.

"Stay back."

Keene raised his pistol.

"Move."

Caleb did not.

Pike reached into the vault.

He lifted the nearest document box.

A red label read ANCHOR MASTER INDEX.

Dane's eyes widened.

Keene smiled.

Then Pike dropped the box.

It hit the floor and burst open.

Hundreds of pages scattered across the concrete.

Keene shouted.

"You idiot!"

Ruiz moved.

He drove his head backward into Dane's face.

Dane's gun fired into the ceiling.

Caleb slammed Keene's weapon arm against the vault door.

Abigail dropped to the floor.

Warren froze for one fatal second.

He could help Keene.

He could help Dane.

He could shoot Caleb.

Or he could run.

He chose himself.

Warren sprinted into the tunnel.

Pike kicked Dane's pistol away.

Ruiz drove Dane into the wall.

Caleb twisted Keene's wrist until the admiral dropped his gun.

Abigail grabbed it and slid it beneath the vault shelving.

Keene punched Caleb in the mouth.

Caleb answered with a short strike to the ribs.

Keene collapsed against the vault frame.

Dane broke free from Ruiz and lunged toward Abigail.

Pike intercepted him.

Both men crashed into the scattered Anchor files.

Ruiz drew his weapon.

"Don't move!"

Dane stopped.

Keene stopped.

Caleb stood between them and Abigail.

Footsteps thundered through the tunnel.

NCIS agents poured into the chamber.

For the first time all night, Abigail believed it might finally be over.

Then Pike looked at the papers scattered around his knees.

His face changed.

"Caleb."

Caleb turned.

Pike held up one page.

It was an Anchor profile.

The photograph showed Nathan Cross.

Across the top was a red stamp.

TERMINATION AUTHORIZED.

At the bottom were three signatures.

Victor Dane.

Marcus Hale.
