Chapter 14 - THE RESET

Emergency lights came on three seconds after the power failed.

Three seconds was long enough for everyone in the safe house to understand that Bianca had not been exaggerating.

Commissioner Reed grabbed his radio.

"Perimeter teams, report."

Static answered first.

Then the north officer responded.

"Vehicle at tree line."

"Two occupants."

"No approach yet."

The south officer reported movement near the utility box.

Vittorio went directly to Lucy.

Maya had already moved her into the interior hallway away from windows.

Lucy looked frightened but alert.

"Daddy, is this because of the bad secret?"

Vittorio crouched beside her.

"People are trying to scare us."

"The police are here."

"Emma and Teresa are here."

"And I am not leaving you."

Lucy nodded.

Then she did something that broke his heart.

She whispered.

"I can be quiet if they come."

Vittorio pulled her into his arms.

"You do not have to make yourself smaller to keep adults calm."

"Do you understand me?"

Lucy looked at him uncertainly.

"You are allowed to make noise."

"You are allowed to ask for help."

"You are allowed to be scared."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Okay."

Reed entered.

"We are moving."

"Where?"

"Backup site."

"Armored vehicle in two minutes."

Vittorio stood.

"What about the people outside?"

"My people handle them."

A loud crack came from the rear of the house.

Lucy jumped.

Emma moved beside her.

"That was outside."

"Stay with me."

Reed's radio came alive.

"Fence breach south side."

"One suspect running east."

"Second vehicle moving."

Vittorio wanted to go toward the sound.

He did not.

His job was Lucy.

That realization felt like a correction to years of bad priorities.

A security officer opened the interior garage.

The armored SUV backed inside.

Lucy, Teresa, Emma, Maya, and Vittorio moved together.

Reed entered last.

As the garage door began to open, something struck it from outside.

Metal rang violently.

Lucy screamed.

Vittorio covered her head with his arms.

The door stopped halfway.

The driver reversed.

Reed shouted into the radio.

"Rear exit compromised."

Another officer sprinted to the manual release.

A second impact hit the door.

This time a narrow gap opened near the bottom.

A black object rolled underneath.

Reed kicked it away before it stopped.

It was not an explosive.

It was a smoke canister.

White smoke began filling the garage.

The officer forced the side service door open.

"Move!"

They crossed into a fenced garden corridor.

A second vehicle waited beyond the side gate.

The route had not been part of the original evacuation plan.

That made it safer.

Vittorio carried Lucy.

Emma ran beside him with the evidence phone in one hand and Lucy's signal-blocked book bag in the other.

A man appeared beyond the hedge.

He wore dark clothing and a baseball cap.

He rushed toward Emma.

Not Lucy.

Emma.

The detail registered instantly.

The man grabbed for the phone.

Emma twisted away.

Vittorio handed Lucy to Teresa and stepped between them.

The attacker swung at him.

Vittorio blocked the blow and drove his shoulder into the man's chest.

Both stumbled against the garden wall.

The attacker reached into his jacket.

A plainclothes officer tackled him before he could pull anything out.

A second officer pinned his wrist.

A knife fell onto the gravel.

Lucy cried out from behind Teresa.

Vittorio moved back to her immediately.

"I am okay."

"Look at me."

"I am okay."

The attacker shouted while officers restrained him.

"The phone!"

He was not asking for Lucy.

He was demanding the phone.

Emma stared at him.

The unknown messages, the videos, and the original recordings were all represented by the device in her hand.

The reset operation was not primarily an abduction attempt.

It was evidence recovery.

Reed heard it too.

"Get Emma into the vehicle."

Everyone loaded into the second SUV.

They left through a farm access road behind the property.

Police vehicles converged from three directions.

The dark vehicle at the tree line fled and was stopped seven miles away.

Its driver was arrested.

The second occupant escaped on foot.

The attacker in the garden was identified as Aaron Pike, a former private security contractor.

His phone contained no contact named Marcus.

But it contained a message sent through an encrypted app.

RECOVER E PHONE AND GREEN BOOK.

NO CHILD CONTACT UNLESS NECESSARY.

Rachel read the message twice.

"Green book?"

Vittorio looked at the signal-blocking bag.

The Secret Garden had a dark green cloth cover.

"They wanted the book too."

Emma frowned.

"Because of the tracker?"

"Why recover a tracker they already controlled?"

Reed asked.

No one answered.

Before leaving the compromised safe house, Reed ordered a complete search of the attackers' vehicles.

The dark sedan contained printed photographs of the property, a hand-drawn route to the side garden, and a list of license plates belonging to the security detail.

The preparation confirmed the assault had not been improvised after the tracker pinged.

Someone had researched the location earlier.

That raised a new question.

If the tracker had only revealed the safe house recently, how did Harper's people already possess a route map?

Reed checked the tracker history.

The chip had pinged from the property the previous morning, minutes after Lucy arrived.

Marcus had known the location almost a full day before the attack.

He had waited.

That patience was worse than panic.

It meant he had time to decide what mattered most.

Emma's phone.

The green book.

Not Lucy, unless necessary.

The instruction confirmed the reset plan had evolved once Marcus realized Sofia's hidden evidence was being uncovered.

Lucy had begun as leverage.

Evidence had become the urgent threat.

Vittorio looked at the route map and understood that Marcus was no longer trying to win the original plan.

He was trying to reduce the damage after losing it.

That made him unpredictable in a different way.

A man building toward control follows structure.

A man watching control disappear may burn anything he cannot keep.

They relocated to a secure floor inside a federal courthouse annex.

It was not comfortable.

It was safe.

Lucy did not complain.

That worried Vittorio.

He sat with her until she fell asleep on a narrow couch in the private conference room.

She held his sleeve even after her breathing became slow and steady.

Emma remained nearby.

"You saved my phone."

Vittorio looked at her.

"You saved my daughter."

"We are not keeping score."

"Good."

"Because I would lose."

Vittorio almost smiled.

It disappeared quickly.

Reed entered carrying the green book in an evidence bag.

"The tracker is not the only thing inside."

Vittorio stood carefully, freeing his sleeve from Lucy's hand without waking her.

They went to the adjoining room.

A forensic technician had opened the back cover seam.

Behind the cardboard backing was a thin plastic sleeve.

Inside was a microSD card.

Emma stared.

"Sofia put that there."

Vittorio remembered Lucy saying her mother had shown her the book.

Sofia had hidden the drawing inside the cover.

She had also hidden digital evidence deeper inside the binding.

The tracker Marcus later installed had been placed in the spine.

Marcus had apparently never found the memory card.

He only realized the book mattered after Vittorio revealed that the red folder was a decoy.

Maybe Marcus remembered Sofia's attachment to the book.

Maybe he suspected another hiding place.

Whatever the reason, he had sent men to recover it.

The microSD card contained twenty-one video files.

Most had been recorded on Sofia's phone.

Some were shaky.

Some showed only a desk or ceiling because Sofia had hidden the camera while recording audio.

The first videos documented hidden cameras around the estate.

The next documented vehicle plates.

The next showed Marcus entering the house when Vittorio was abroad.

Then came a video dated eleven days before Sofia died.

Sofia had placed her phone behind books in Vittorio's study.

Marcus entered with Henry Calloway.

Both men were clearly visible.

Henry opened Vittorio's locked cabinet with a key.

Marcus removed a trust document.

Henry said.

"If Sofia blocks the sale again, pressure increases."

Marcus replied.

"She is already suspicious."

"Then frighten her."

"Do not create a martyr."

Vittorio felt his jaw clench.

Henry had later claimed Marcus acted alone on the highway.

The video proved Henry had authorized intimidation.

Another video showed Harper Quinn entering the study.

She photographed estate papers.

A third showed Peter Lang leaving a file for Marcus.

Peter had admitted that.

Then they reached a video dated five days before Sofia died.

Sofia had recorded a conversation in the greenhouse.

Marcus stood near the camellias.

Sofia faced him.

Her voice was steady.

"You have been in my daughter's room."

Marcus denied it.

Sofia held up one of the hidden cameras.

"Then explain why your device login appears in its network history."

Marcus's face changed.

It was the same change Vittorio had seen when Emma showed the breakfast-room video.

Calculation replacing charm.

"You should talk to Vittorio."

"I will."

"Tonight."

Marcus stepped closer.

"Be careful what you accuse people of."

Sofia did not move.

"That sounds like a threat."

"It is advice."

"Here is mine."

Sofia's voice sharpened.

"Stay away from Lucy."

Marcus smiled.

"You cannot protect her from everything."

Sofia answered.

"I only need to protect her from you."

The video ended.

Vittorio covered his mouth with one hand.

He had not seen Sofia alive in a new image for three years.

It felt impossible and immediate.

Emma was crying openly.

The technician opened the final file.

The timestamp was the morning Sofia died.

She sat inside her car before leaving the estate.

Rain tapped the windshield.

She looked directly into the camera.

"Vittorio, I am going to meet someone who says he can prove who funds Marcus."

"If I am wrong, I will come home and you will tease me for turning our life into a spy novel."

She smiled briefly.

Vittorio stopped breathing.

Then her expression became serious.

"If I am right, I need you to know that Bianca Vale is not the woman to fear most."

"Henry is."

Vittorio looked at Reed.

Sofia continued.

"But there is one person Henry is afraid of too."

The video glitched.

For three seconds, the image froze.

Then Sofia said the name.

The audio disappeared.

May you like

The file ended.
