Chapter 2 — A Father Finally Chose

Bennett slowly stood.
His hands trembled.
He walked past every guest until he stopped directly in front of his mother.
"You owe Harper an apology."
Evelyn folded her arms.
"I owe her discipline."
"No."
His voice became stronger.
"You owe her childhood."
The room froze again.
For years Bennett had always chosen peace over confrontation.
Not today.
"You made my daughter believe love had to be earned."
Evelyn scoffed.
"I made her stronger."
Bennett shook his head.
"You made her afraid."
He pointed toward the television.
"Every time she smiled... you found a reason to erase it."
He looked toward the trash can where the ruined butterfly cake still rested beneath crushed paper plates.
"She'll remember that cake for the rest of her life."
"And so will I."
Evelyn searched the room for support.
She found none.
Parents who had once politely tolerated her now looked at her with open disgust.
One father quietly gathered his family.
"We're leaving."
He stopped beside Harper.
"Happy Birthday, sweetheart."
Then another family followed.
Instead of leaving quietly...
Each child walked over to Harper first.
One by one.
They handed her their birthday gifts.
They hugged her.
One little girl even whispered,
"I still want to sing."
Soon every child joined together.
Without music.
Without cake.
Without anyone asking.
"Happy birthday to you..."
Harper burst into tears for the first time that afternoon.
Not because of what she had lost.
Because she finally realized she wasn't alone.
When the song ended, Bennett turned back toward Evelyn.
"You are no longer welcome in our home."
She stared at him in disbelief.
"You'd choose them over your own mother?"
He answered without hesitation.
"I choose my daughter."
Those four words ended years of silence.
Evelyn picked up her designer handbag.
No one stopped her.
The front door closed behind her with a quiet click.
And for the first time...
The house felt peaceful.
