Chapter 1 — The Reading of the Will
The flashing police lights disappeared into the distance, taking Richard and Elaine Whitman with them.
Silence settled over the mansion.
For the first time since Mark's death, the house actually felt empty.
Julia stood in the grand foyer with Ethan and Emma beside her. Rainwater dripped from their coats onto the marble floor where family portraits still lined the walls.
Rebecca Hale quietly closed the front door.
"They won't be coming back tonight."
Julia nodded but couldn't move.
Everything still smelled like Mark.
His favorite coffee mug sat untouched beside the kitchen sink.
His reading glasses remained on the library desk.
His jacket still hung beside the front entrance.
Emma suddenly burst into tears.
"I don't want Daddy's house to be so quiet."
Julia knelt and hugged her tightly.
"It's still our home."
Rebecca gently cleared her throat.
"There is one more thing."
She opened her leather briefcase and removed another sealed envelope.
"This was to be opened only after Mark's funeral."
Julia slowly unfolded the pages.
Mark's familiar handwriting covered every line.
My beautiful family... if you are reading this, then I couldn't protect you myself. But I promised I would never leave you defenseless.
He explained that years earlier he had discovered millions of dollars disappearing from Whitman Logistics.
Richard and Elaine had built fake companies, hidden profits offshore, forged board approvals, and blamed missing funds on failed investments.
Mark had secretly documented everything.
He knew that exposing them while he was alive would destroy the company overnight.
Instead...
He patiently built a legal trap.
By the time his parents acted against Julia, every piece of evidence had already been delivered to the authorities.
At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.
The company was never my greatest achievement. You, Ethan, and Emma were.
Julia pressed the letter against her chest.
The entire family cried together.
For the first time...
May you like
Not because they had lost Mark.
But because they finally understood how fiercely he had loved them.
