Chapter 2: The Safe That Was Already Empty

That evening I didn't go home.

Instead, I drove directly to my attorney's office.

The power-of-attorney papers.

The fake medical documents.

The text messages.

The photos Lily secretly took from her bedroom window showing Eleanor walking normally through the garage.

Everything went into one file.

Then my lawyer asked one question.

"Has your daughter's inheritance been touched?"

"I don't know."

"Let's find out."

We returned home with two police detectives.

Ethan was waiting.

"So this is how you're handling our marriage?"

He tried to sound offended.

No one answered him.

One detective walked directly toward the family safe.

"Sir, please open it."

Ethan hesitated.

Only for a second.

Inside were passports.

Insurance policies.

Cash.

But one velvet box was missing.

My breath caught.

"Lily's bracelet."

It was gone.

Ethan looked genuinely confused.

"It was there yesterday."

The detective stared at him.

"Interesting answer."

Not...

"I didn't take it."

But...

"It was there yesterday."

Eleanor quietly slipped toward the hallway.

Another officer stopped her.

"Ma'am."

"Please remain where you are."

She smiled.

"Of course."

The detective checked security footage from the home's camera system.

Someone had entered the safe room at 2:14 that morning.

The hooded figure knew the alarm code.

Knew exactly where the bracelet was kept.

Knew which camera angle was blind.

When the footage zoomed in...

Everyone saw the same bright red manicure.

Eleanor's.

She never denied it.

Instead, she calmly laughed.

"I was only protecting Ethan."

My husband looked horrified.

"I never told you to steal it."

She turned toward him.

"No."

"You only complained every night that Megan would never sign."

"You complained about the trust."

"You complained about the bracelet."

"So I solved your problem."

The room fell completely silent.

For the first time...

Even Ethan realized he had created a monster he could no longer control.
