Chapter 1: The Package No One Wanted to Open

Chapter 1: The Package No One Wanted to Open

Three days after the wedding, a courier arrived at my mother's house.

Another stopped at Melissa's new home less than an hour later.

Neither package had a return address.

Inside each was the same thing.

A plain white box.

A framed photograph.

And a handwritten letter.

The photograph had been taken at the reception.

Not by a guest.

By the venue's professional photographer.

It captured one perfect moment.

Eight-year-old Ethan standing silently beside the table.

His small hands clutching the place card.

The words "RESERVED FOR TRASH" were crystal clear.

Around him, Melissa was laughing.

My mother was smiling with her champagne glass raised.

Several relatives could be seen watching.

No one was helping the child.

The letter underneath contained only one sentence.

"Some memories deserve to last forever."

Melissa called me immediately.

"What kind of sick joke is this?"

I stayed silent.

Then calmly answered.

"It isn't a joke."

"You said humiliation was funny."

"Now everyone gets to see the punchline."

Before she could reply, I ended the call.

She still had no idea the photograph wasn't only sent to her.

It had also been mailed to every member of our family.

Including people who hadn't attended the wedding.

By evening, my phone exploded with messages.

"What happened?"

"Is this real?"

"Why didn't anyone stop it?"

For the first time...

The people who had remained silent during the wedding had to explain why.

And silence suddenly became much harder to defend.
