Chapter 11 - The Server Floor

Nathan had already called building security by the time I left the diner.
Vanessa came with me.
She did not ask permission.
I did not tell her to stay behind.
The flash drive was inside my bag.
Two security vehicles followed our car across the Queensboro Bridge.
Manhattan looked almost unreal before dawn.
Empty avenues.
Wet pavement.
Glass towers glowing above streets that had not yet filled with people.
Somewhere in one of those towers, Miles Grant was trying to reach the raw audit archive.
"Why would he risk this?" I asked.
Vanessa sat across from me in the rear-facing seat.
"Because he is terrified of Everett."
"That does not explain why he is helping him."
"You do not know Everett the way Miles does."
"I was married to him for ten years."
"You knew the husband he wanted you to see."
"And you knew the man who threatened you for an heir?"
Vanessa looked away.
"Fair."
Nathan spoke through the car's secure line.
"Claire, building security reached the thirty-fourth floor."
"And?"
"Miles locked himself inside the server corridor."
"Can he delete the archive?"
"Not the external mirror."
"There is a mirror?"
"We created one after the first audit anomaly."
"Why did no one tell me?"
"Because until thirty-six hours ago, you were not operating the company."
That answer irritated me because it was sensible.
"Can he destroy anything useful?"
"Local authentication logs, possibly some live mail archives."
"Stop him."
"Security is waiting for police because he claims he is an officer of the company and has lawful access."
"He disabled cameras."
"Which makes the claim weaker, not nonexistent."
"Nathan."
"I know."
We reached Hale Meridian headquarters at 4:38 a.m.
The lobby that had applauded Everett the day before was empty now.
A security supervisor met us at the private elevator.
"Mr. Grant entered at 4:02."
"Badge logs?"
"Preserved."
"Video?"
"Preserved until he disabled the corridor cameras."
"Any accomplice?"
"No one visible."
We rode to the thirty-third floor.
Police had sealed the stairwell above us.
Nathan was waiting near the elevator doors.
He looked at Vanessa.
"You should not be here."
"Miles may listen to me."
"Or he may use you."
"He already did."
I stepped between them.
"Where is he?"
Nathan pointed toward a security monitor.
The thirty-fourth-floor corridor camera had come back online from a secondary feed.
Miles stood behind a glass access door.
He wore a suit without a tie.
His face looked gray.
One hand held a laptop.
The other held his phone.
He was not destroying racks with a hammer.
He was not carrying a weapon.
He looked like an accountant who had finally understood the size of the numbers around him.
The security supervisor opened a two-way intercom.
"Mr. Grant, police are outside the restricted area."
Miles looked toward the speaker.
"I have executive authorization."
Nathan pressed the button.
"From whom?"
Miles recognized his voice.
"Everett Hale."
"Mr. Hale is suspended from operational authority."
"The court preserved his rights."
"Not treasury or server access."
Miles's face tightened.
"I am the deputy CFO."
"Then you know exactly what the audit hold means."
Vanessa moved closer to the microphone.
"Miles."
His entire body changed.
He looked directly at the camera.
"Vanessa?"
"Yes."
"Why are you there?"
"Because you stopped answering me."
"You need to leave."
"Is the baby yours?"
Nathan looked at her sharply.
I said nothing.
Miles closed his eyes.
"Not here."
"Then come out."
"You do not understand."
"Make me understand."
Miles looked over his shoulder toward the server room.
"Everett has copies of everything."
"Everything what?"
"The transfers."
"Then deleting the server changes nothing."
"I am not deleting it."
Nathan leaned toward the intercom.
"What are you doing?"
Miles hesitated.
"Trying to find the file he wants destroyed."
"Which file?"
"A voice archive from 2018."
My pulse quickened.
"Who is on it?"
Miles stared through the glass.
"Diane and Lucas."
Vanessa stopped moving.
"My father?"
Miles's expression broke.
"Vanessa, I am sorry."
"For what?"
"I did not know when I started working for Everett."
"Know what?"
"That he set Lucas up."
The corridor seemed to contract around us.
Nathan pressed the microphone.
"Miles, step away from the server room and hand the laptop to police."
"If I do that, Everett will bury me."
"If you do not, the evidence of your conduct gets worse by the minute."
Miles laughed weakly.
"You lawyers always think prison is the worst thing that can happen."
"What is worse?"
Miles looked at Vanessa.
"Ask her father."
A police officer spoke with Nathan quietly.
They were preparing to open the access door using an override key.
Miles saw the movement on the other side.
"Wait."
He lifted the laptop.
"I found the archive."
"Do not alter it," Nathan said.
"I am sending it."
"To whom?"
"Claire."
My phone chimed.
An encrypted file appeared.
Nathan moved beside me.
"Do not open it on your personal device."
"I know."
We transferred it to a forensic laptop.
The audio was thirty-one minutes long.
The date was September 2018.
Lucas's voice came first.
"You cannot keep routing vendor payments through family entities."
Then Diane.
"They are not family entities."
"Peter registered them."
"Peter registers many things."
"I have eleven transfers."
"Then you have eleven accounting errors."
"I have forty-seven million dollars."
Silence.
Then Diane's voice became colder.
"Be careful, Lucas."
"Is that a threat?"
"It is advice."
Lucas continued.
"Henry knows."
Another silence.
Diane said, "How much does he know?"
"Enough."
"Does Claire?"
"No."
"Keep it that way."
"Why?"
Diane laughed softly.
"Because Claire is useful while she believes Everett loves her."
Vanessa covered her mouth.
I felt something inside me tear open.
The recording continued.
Lucas said, "What does that have to do with the transfers?"
Diane answered, "Everything."
"Explain."
"No."
"Then I am taking this to the board."
"Do that, and the board will learn you own Vanta Shore."
"I do not."
"The filing says you do."
"You forged it."
"Prove it."
Lucas swore.
Then came a sound like a chair scraping.
"You are setting me up."
Diane said nothing.
Lucas's voice rose.
"Why?"
Her answer was almost casual.
"Because someone has to be the thief."
The recording ended five minutes later with Lucas promising to go to my father.
The remaining minutes contained only room noise.
Nathan looked at me.
"This is enough to reopen the 2018 investigation."
"And enough to destroy Diane's story."
Vanessa's face was wet with tears.
"She ruined him."
"She tried to," I said.
Vanessa stared at me.
I realized too late what I had revealed.
"Tried?"
I said nothing.
Her eyes narrowed.
"You know something."
"Vanessa."
"Is my father alive?"
The corridor door clicked.
Police entered the server floor and approached Miles.
He raised both hands.
No struggle.
No drama.
Just surrender.
Vanessa did not look away from me.
"Claire, is my father alive?"
I had promised Lucas I would not tell her.
But he had called me for help protecting the same daughter he had abandoned.
His secrecy was no longer only his decision.
"Yes."
Vanessa made a sound I will never forget.
Not a scream.
Not a sob.
A breath collapsing under eight years of anger.
She sat down hard in a chair.
"Where?"
"I do not know exactly."
"You spoke to him."
"Yes."
"When?"
"Tonight."
"And you did not tell me?"
"He asked me not to."
Vanessa laughed through tears.
"Of course he did."
Miles was escorted through the access door.
He saw her crying.
His face crumpled.
"Vanessa."
She stood.
"Is the baby yours?"
Police paused.
Miles looked at me, then Nathan, then Vanessa.
"It could be."
"That is not enough."
"I know."
"Did you know Everett was going to use it?"
"No."
"Did you know Diane paid me?"
"Not at first."
"Did you help them move money?"
Miles closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Vanessa slapped him.
The sound cracked through the corridor.
A police officer moved forward.
Miles lifted a hand.
"It is fine."
Vanessa was shaking.
"Nothing about you is fine."
He looked at her abdomen.
"I am sorry."
"Stop saying that."
Miles turned to me.
"There is one more file."
"Where?"
"Everett kept it off-network."
"What file?"
"A conservatorship package."
Nathan went still.
"For Claire?"
Miles nodded.
"They were preparing to have her declared temporarily incapacitated after the gala."
My skin went cold.
"On what evidence?"
"Medical records, therapist affidavits, witness statements, video from the ballroom, and the fake email."
"Why?"
"Because a guardian could exercise her voting rights while the court reviewed the trust."
"Everett wanted to become my guardian."
"No."
Miles looked at Diane's old audio file still frozen on the screen.
"Diane did."
That was worse.
Much worse.
"Where is the package?"
Miles hesitated.
"With the psychiatrist who signed it."
"Name?"
"Dr. Malcolm Warren."
Nathan and I looked at each other.
"Warren is dead," Nathan said.
Miles's face emptied.
"What?"
"He died two years ago."
Miles shook his head slowly.
"Then someone has been meeting Everett under his name."
The forged affidavit was not merely a fake signature.
May you like
Someone had built an entire living identity around a dead doctor.
And that person had been preparing the legal papers to take away my right to make decisions for myself.
