Chapter 1: The Woman Noah Remembered
The ballroom fell into stunned silence.
Noah clung to Marina's legs as though he feared she might disappear if he let go. Tears filled the young housekeeper's eyes, but she didn't move.
"Mommy," Noah repeated softly.
Logan felt the room spinning around him.
Vanessa stepped forward first. "This is ridiculous," she said sharply. "He's confused."
But Noah shook his head and buried his face deeper into Marina's uniform.
Marina finally looked at Logan.
"I never wanted this to happen here," she whispered.
Logan stared at her. "What are you talking about?"
With trembling hands, Marina pulled a silver necklace from beneath her collar. Hanging from it was a tiny locket.
Inside was a photograph.
A younger Logan.
Holding a newborn baby.
The same baby now wrapped around Marina's legs.
The truth struck him like lightning.
Two years ago, after a brief relationship, Marina had disappeared before he ever learned she was pregnant.
