Chapter 3: The Trap

Chapter 3: The Trap

I didn't confront Richard.

Instead, I called Detective Harris.

"I think they're still trying to finish what they started."

The detective smiled.

"Then let's help them."

Three days later, Richard called.

"Daniel," he said warmly.

"I heard about your mother's accident. Terrible situation."

His voice sounded almost rehearsed.

"I've prepared a few legal documents to protect your assets during the divorce."

Exactly what I expected.

I agreed to meet him.

The conference room looked ordinary.

Richard slid a thick folder across the table.

"Just routine paperwork."

I pretended to skim the pages.

Buried halfway through was exactly what I had predicted.

A permanent transfer of financial authority.

One signature.

That was all he needed.

Instead, I smiled.

"I'd like my accountant to review everything first."

For the first time, Richard looked nervous.

At that exact moment, Detective Harris walked into the room with two investigators.

Richard stood.

"I think there's been some misunderstanding."

The detective calmly placed printed screenshots from my hidden cameras onto the table.

Richard stared at the photos.

His face turned white.

One image showed him threatening my mother.

Another showed him carrying financial records out of my office.

The room fell completely silent.

Then Detective Harris said the words Richard never expected to hear.

"You're under arrest."
