Chapter 1: Behind the Iron Gates

Chapter 1: Behind the Iron Gates

The black gates opened before Hannah's old sedan reached them.

No guard stepped forward.

No one checked her identification.

Someone had been watching her since she entered the mountain road.

Her stomach tightened.

The estate stretched across acres of forest like a fortress hidden from the world. Stone walls rose above manicured gardens. Security cameras tracked every movement. Armed guards stood at every entrance without speaking.

She suddenly understood something.

People didn't escape this place.

They were allowed to leave.

Or they weren't.

A butler opened her car door before she touched the handle.

"Miss Hannah."

He knew her name.

"This way."

Inside, the mansion was impossibly quiet.

No laughter.

No music.

Only polished marble floors and portraits of generations whose eyes seemed to follow her through every corridor.

The silence broke when a small pair of feet came racing toward her.

"Lily."

The little girl threw both arms around Hannah before stopping herself, remembering she had never asked permission.

Hannah smiled and signed.

Good morning.

Lily's face lit up.

She answered immediately.

You came.

Across the hall, Matteo watched everything.

He never smiled.

But for the first time, Hannah saw something softer beneath the cold calculation.

Hope.

Breakfast passed quietly.

Lily refused to let Hannah leave her side.

She laughed for the first time in years, according to the house staff.

Even the servants exchanged stunned glances.

After the meal, Matteo led Hannah into his private study.

The heavy oak doors locked behind them.

On the desk lay an old leather folder.

Yellowed.

Worn.

Waiting.

Matteo slid it toward her.

"Tell me your father's name."

Hannah frowned.

"Daniel Carter."

Matteo never looked away.

"I know."

He opened the folder.

Inside were faded photographs.

One showed a much younger Matteo standing beside a smiling man.

Hannah's heart stopped.

The man beside him...

Was her father.

"You knew him?"

Matteo nodded once.

"He saved my life fifteen years ago."

Hannah stared in disbelief.

"My father was a schoolteacher."

"No."

Matteo's voice remained calm.

"That's who he became."

"He wasn't always."

He turned another page.

There were newspaper clippings.

Warehouse fires.

Organized crime.

Missing witnesses.

Explosions.

One headline froze Hannah's blood.

Warehouse Explosion Claims Eight Lives.

The date matched the day Lily's mother died.

Matteo placed one final photograph before her.

It showed Daniel standing beside a steel container.

Hidden inside...

Crates filled with military explosives.

"My daughter lost her hearing because of what happened that night."

Hannah's breathing became shallow.

"My father..."

"He didn't plant the bomb."

Matteo interrupted.

"But he knew who did."

"And he disappeared before he could testify."

The room fell silent.

Then Matteo spoke words that shattered everything Hannah believed.

"The people who killed Lily's mother..."

"They're hunting you now."
