Chapter 1: The Secret Hidden Inside the Handbag
Chapter 1: The Secret Hidden Inside the Handbag
The silence in the hotel lobby lasted only a few seconds.
Then Victoria Hale forced herself to laugh.
"You've all heard enough," she said, tightening her grip on the handbag. "This little thief is making up stories."
She reached for the child again.
But the little girl refused to let go.
"I promised my mother," she whispered. "No matter what happens... I can't let you take it."
The words sent another wave of panic across Victoria's face.
Guests began exchanging uneasy glances.
Something was wrong.
The concierge, who had remained silent until then, finally stepped forward.
"Madam... perhaps we should simply open the bag and settle this."
Victoria spun toward him.
"No!"
The single word echoed through the marble lobby.
Too fast.
Too desperate.
She immediately forced another smile.
"My private belongings are none of your business."
But it was already too late.
People had noticed.
The terrified little girl wasn't protecting a stolen handbag.
Victoria was protecting whatever was inside it.
The concierge carefully loosened the child's fingers.
Instead of handing the bag back to Victoria...
...he placed it on the reception counter.
"If both of you claim ownership," he said calmly, "we'll let the contents decide."
Victoria's breathing became uneven.
The little girl quietly nodded.
"Open it."
The concierge unfastened the gold clasp.
Inside weren't stacks of cash.
Nor priceless jewelry.
Instead...
A faded brown envelope rested on top.
Across its front were six handwritten words.
PROPERTY OF ELEANOR HALE. OPEN ONLY IF I DISAPPEAR.
Victoria staggered backward.
"No..."
The little girl looked at her with heartbreaking calm.
"My mother said you'd be afraid of that envelope."
