CHAPTER 2: THE NAME THAT SHOOK THE ROOM

CHAPTER 2: THE NAME THAT SHOOK THE ROOM

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The entire ballroom stood frozen as Colonel Richard Vance stared at Maya Vaughn with tears gathering in his eyes.

Victoria Vaughn laughed nervously.

"This is ridiculous. It's an old pendant."

Richard turned slowly toward her.

"No."

His voice was calm.

Terrifyingly calm.

"This pendant belonged to General Alexander Sterling."

The room exploded with whispers.

Every person in attendance knew that name.

Alexander Sterling was not merely a decorated military hero.

He was a national legend.

The man who had led rescue operations during wartime and saved hundreds of lives.

More importantly...

Twenty-two years ago, his only daughter and infant granddaughter disappeared during a suspicious highway accident.

Neither was ever found.

The case became one of the nation's greatest mysteries.

Richard swallowed hard.

"The pendant was custom-made for his granddaughter."

Victoria's face lost all color.

"What are you saying?"

The Colonel looked directly at Maya.

"I'm saying this woman is not an orphan."

The room fell silent again.

Maya blinked.

"What?"

Richard stepped closer.

His voice softened.

"Your real name isn't Maya Vaughn."

His hands trembled.

"It's Maya Sterling."

Maya's knees nearly gave out.

The baby stirred in her arms.

"No... that's impossible."

Richard carefully turned the pendant over.

Behind decades of scratches, one engraving remained visible.

M.S.

Maya Sterling.

The initials stared back at her.

For the first time in her life, Maya felt the ground shift beneath her feet.

Everything she believed about herself suddenly felt uncertain.

And across the room, Victoria Vaughn looked terrified.
