Chapter 1: The Words That Froze the Mansion

The kitchen fell silent.

Grace had quietly folded her apron and placed it on the counter without arguing. She had worked in enough homes to know that some people measured worth by kindness, while others measured it by power.

Victoria crossed her arms.

"I expect you to leave immediately."

Daniel had not yet returned from a business meeting, leaving Victoria convinced she had every right to make decisions inside the mansion.

Grace smiled gently at Liam.

"It was a pleasure cooking with you."

She turned toward the door.

Then something happened that no one expected.

Tiny footsteps echoed across the marble floor.

Liam ran after her.

He wrapped both arms around Grace's waist and held on as tightly as he could.

For a second, nobody moved.

Then, after more than a year of barely speaking, the little boy looked directly at Victoria.

His voice trembled.

"But... she promised Mommy she would take care of me."

The sentence struck the room like lightning.

Victoria's confident smile disappeared.

"What did you say?"

Liam swallowed hard.

"Mommy knew Grace."

The front door opened.

Daniel had just arrived home.

He walked into the kitchen in time to hear every word.

He stared at his son.

"Liam... what do you mean?"

The boy looked up at his father with tear-filled eyes.

"The lady who cooks..."

"...Mommy hugged her in the hospital."

Daniel felt the blood drain from his face.

Grace slowly closed her eyes.

The secret she had promised Emma to keep had finally been spoken.
