Chapter 1: The Truth Inside the Medical File

Ethan stood frozen in the silent living room, his designer suitcase slipping from his fingers and crashing onto the hardwood floor.

The nursery door remained open.

The mobile above the empty crib spun slowly in the air-conditioning, making the room feel even more abandoned.

"Where are they?" he whispered.

Across the room, his mother sat calmly on the sofa, a thick medical file resting on her lap.

She looked ten years older than she had three days earlier.

Without answering, she slid the folder across the coffee table.

"You should read."

Inside were emergency room records.

Lab results.

Surgical reports.

Photographs.

His wife's blood pressure had collapsed only hours after he boarded his flight.

She had suffered a severe postpartum hemorrhage.

She had called him twenty-three times.

Sent fourteen text messages.

Left three voicemails.

Every one had gone unanswered.

A final page stopped his breathing.

Emergency Contact: Mother-in-law.

Husband unreachable.

His hands began to shake.

"No..."

His mother finally spoke.

"The doctors said she would have died if the ambulance had arrived fifteen minutes later."

He looked up with tears filling his eyes.

"Where is she?"

His mother didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she placed another envelope beside the file.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

"When I married you, I believed our child would grow up with a father who would protect us.

Instead, our son learned, on his tenth day of life, that his father chose a birthday vacation over his mother's life.

If I survived... I promised myself I would never let him learn that kind of love."

Ethan collapsed into the chair.

For the first time in years...

He realized he had not simply made a mistake.

He had abandoned his own family.
