Chapter 1 — The Briefcase That Ended the Marriage
The silence inside the ballroom became unbearable.
More than three hundred guests stared as Jonathan Reed gently rested the worn leather briefcase beside Emma's wedding ring.
Daniel forced a laugh.
"What is this? Some kind of joke?"
Jonathan ignored him.
Instead, he looked at Emma.
"Mrs. Carter... before you make your final decision, I was instructed to deliver these."
He slowly opened the briefcase.
Inside were several thick folders, a sealed envelope bearing an old wax stamp, and three small digital voice recorders.
The guests leaned forward.
Daniel's confident smile faded.
Jonathan removed the envelope first.
"The last will and legal instructions of Richard Carter."
Daniel frowned.
"My grandfather?"
Jonathan nodded.
"The documents were sealed until one condition was fulfilled."
Emma looked up.
"What condition?"
Jonathan's eyes never left hers.
"You willingly removed your wedding ring after discovering your husband's deliberate public humiliation."
The ballroom erupted into whispers.
Daniel's face lost its color.
"That's impossible."
"My grandfather died years ago."
Jonathan calmly unfolded the first document.
"He knew exactly who his grandson had become."
The attorney continued.
"Richard Carter believed that true character only appears when someone thinks there are no consequences."
"He instructed private investigators to quietly monitor your marriage after the wedding."
Daniel stepped backward.
"You've been spying on me?"
"No."
Jonathan replied calmly.
"Your grandfather was."
He pressed play on the first recorder.
Daniel's own voice echoed across the ballroom.
"Once we're married, she'll never leave. She owns forty-nine percent of the Carter Foundation, but she doesn't even know it."
Gasps swept through the guests.
Emma slowly turned toward her husband.
Her eyes showed no anger.
Only disappointment.
Jonathan opened the second folder.
