Chapter 5 — The Home They Finally Deserved

Six months later, the mansion stood empty.

I sold it.

Every painful memory disappeared with the closing papers.

Sarah chose a modest white farmhouse twenty miles outside the city.

Nothing extravagant.

Just peaceful.

Jamie picked the bedroom overlooking the apple trees.

The first night in our new home, he stood in front of a refrigerator so full he couldn't decide what to eat.

He looked back at me.

"Dad..."

"Can I really have the chicken?"

My throat tightened.

"You never have to ask permission to eat again."

He smiled.

A real smile.

The kind I had imagined during every lonely night in the Saudi desert.

Sarah slipped her hand into mine.

"We're home," she whispered.

I nodded.

Not because we had a new house.

Not because the money had been recovered.

Not because justice had finally arrived.

We were home because fear no longer lived with us.

Some people believe betrayal destroys a family forever.

May you like

They were wrong.

Sometimes it destroys the people who betrayed the family... and gives everyone else the chance to build a better one from the truth.
