Chapter 16 - Sarah’s Last Untold Day

I read Sarah's draft in the quiet of the evidence room.
The document described a meeting in which Claudia had offered money for Sarah's silence.
When Sarah refused, Claudia claimed to know my military history, our home address, and Lily's preschool routine.
Sarah recorded the threats but said she couldn't prove who had ordered them.
Her notes did not say anyone caused her cancer.
That was a possibility someone wanted me to assume, and the evidence did not support it.
The actual wrong was terrible enough: while she was becoming ill, people had threatened to take her family away if she told the truth.
A second draft explained why she had hidden the records instead of telling me immediately.
She had approached a trusted intermediary and been warned that my command structure might already be monitored.
Rather than risk exposing my work and our daughter, she kept the evidence with the music box and waited to identify an honest investigator.
She ran out of time.
I pressed my forehead against the wall.
For years I had carried resentment that she'd suffered alone without letting me help.
Now I understood that she'd been making the same impossible calculation I had made for Lily: what truth could be shared without creating another target?
Torres came in quietly. "We have a new statement from Owen Mercer."
Owen had requested counsel and agreed to provide limited information in exchange for prosecutors considering his cooperation.
He acknowledged helping arrange the false school pickup, insisting Claudia told him Lily would be returned quickly.
He also admitted he had transported corporate materials to Adrian Bell's private facility.
"Can he link Bell to the threats?" I asked.
"He says Victor gave the orders and Bell financed the operation. We're corroborating it."
Owen also claimed Rusk wasn't Bell's partner but Bell's intended victim.
According to him, Bell had manipulated leaked documents to make Rusk look corrupt, and Rusk panicked when he realized how badly his command had been compromised.
It was a story that benefited Owen.
We treated it as a lead, not a conclusion.
An independent inquiry requested Rusk's communication logs and found that he had hidden early warnings about the operation's security.
Whether he had knowingly participated in the financial scheme remained uncertain.
Renee learned that Claudia had requested a private meeting through counsel.
Investigators saw a chance to secure a statement, but Renee refused to meet without her lawyer and medical advocate.
The meeting took place by recorded video under agreed conditions.
Claudia looked tired for the first time.
"Ren," she said, "I was trying to keep the company from collapsing."
Renee's voice stayed steady. "You threatened Sarah."
Claudia looked away. "I did things I regret."
"Did you interfere with my medicine?"
"I handled what Victor told me to handle."
"That's not an answer."
Claudia closed her eyes. "Victor told me you'd be safe if I cooperated."
Renee's expression changed. "Safe from whom?"
Claudia opened her eyes again.
May you like
"From Bell," she said. "Victor doesn't control him anymore."
