CHAPTER 3: THE UNEXPECTED WITNESS

When court resumed, everyone expected the final arguments.

Instead, a voice came from the back of the room.

“Your Honor, may I speak?”

An elderly man slowly stood.

It was Mr. Harold Bennett.

The brothers' next-door neighbor.

He had known their family for over ten years.

The judge allowed him to approach.

Harold took a deep breath.

“Most people see a teenager.”

He pointed gently toward Ethan.

“I see the young man who carried groceries for my wife when she was sick.”

He paused.

“The young man who fixed my fence without asking for money.”

Another pause.

“And the young man who has been raising his brother alone for months.”

The courtroom listened carefully.

Harold continued.

“Every morning before school, Ethan makes Noah breakfast.”

“Every evening, he helps him with homework.”

“Every night, he checks that little boy's room before going to sleep.”

The old man looked directly at the judge.

“I've seen fathers do less.”

The room fell silent.

Then something unexpected happened.

One by one, people stood.

A teacher.

A coach.

A local shop owner.

Each shared stories about Ethan's sacrifices.

The judge listened to every word.

Meanwhile, Noah stared at his brother with admiration.

As if he were already the hero everyone was describing.

For the first time since entering the courtroom, Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

Not because he was afraid.

But because he finally realized he wasn't fighting alone.
