Chapter 4 — The Trap Closes
Chapter 4 — The Trap Closes
Nathaniel hired someone without telling anyone.
Former homicide detective Daniel Cross.
Now one of the country's best private investigators.
Daniel spent two days examining everything.
The staircase.
The hospital reports.
Vivien's background.
Phone records.
Financial transactions.
Then he walked into Nathaniel's office carrying a thick folder.
"You were right not to ignore your instincts."
Nathaniel looked up.
"What did you find?"
Daniel placed several photographs across the desk.
Vivien meeting secretly with a man outside a luxury hotel.
Bank transfers totaling nearly twelve million dollars.
A shell company registered overseas.
Then the final document.
A revised copy of Margaret Whitmore's will.
Signed only six weeks earlier.
If Margaret died...
Nathaniel would inherit everything immediately.
If Nathaniel married afterward...
Vivien would become entitled to a massive portion of the Whitmore fortune.
Daniel spoke quietly.
"Someone expected Margaret to die."
Nathaniel's jaw tightened.
"And if she had..."
"The wedding would have happened exactly three weeks later."
Silence filled the office.
Finally Nathaniel asked the question he already feared.
"Can we prove she pushed my mother?"
Daniel answered honestly.

"Not yet."
"But I think someone else already can."
