In 1928, 25 mothers traveled to Washington, D.C., to establish American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. They updated the blue star banners by adding gold stars, representing the loss of their loved ones in service.

In 1936, Congress declared the last Sunday of September as Gold Star Mother’s Day. The day honors mothers who lost children in military service and preserves the legacy of the blue and gold star programs.
