Iranian MP Accuses Ukraine of Acting as a ‘Warring Party’ in the Middle East

An Iranian lawmaker has accused Ukraine of effectively joining the Middle East conflict, warning that Tehran could consider Ukrainian territory a legitimate target due to Kyiv’s alleged support for Israel.

Ebrahim Azizi, a member of Iran’s parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, made the claim in a post on X on March 14.

According to Azizi, Ukraine’s reported assistance to Israel—particularly involving drone capabilities—places it directly in the conflict.

“By providing drone support to Israel, Ukraine has become a warring party,” Azizi wrote. “Under Article 51 of the UN Charter, the entire territory of Ukraine could now be considered a legitimate target for Iran.”

Article 51 of the United Nations Charter recognizes a nation’s right to self-defense if it comes under attack.

The provision allows states to use force to defend themselves or assist allies under threat, though such actions are meant to be temporary and subject to oversight by the UN.

Ukraine swiftly dismissed the warning. Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel Yevgen Korniychuk described the statement as provocative and insisted Kyiv would not be intimidated.

“Our relationship with Iran has long been complicated,” Korniychuk told i24 News, pointing to Tehran’s supply of drones and military technology to Russia during the war in Ukraine.

“We are not concerned by these threats and remain prepared to support our partners when necessary, including Israel.”

Azizi’s remarks followed comments from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who revealed that 11 countries have approached Kyiv seeking assistance in defending against Shahed-series drones—loitering munitions developed by Iran.

Tensions across the Middle East have escalated sharply in recent weeks.

After US and Israeli strikes on February 28, Iran launched a retaliatory wave of missiles and drones targeting Israel as well as sites in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

Targets reportedly included US military bases, ports, airports, oil facilities, and several high-rise buildings.

While US and Israeli air defense systems intercepted many of the ballistic missiles, swarms of low-cost drones managed to penetrate defenses and strike certain infrastructure sites, including energy facilities.

Ukraine, meanwhile, has gained extensive experience countering similar attacks. Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Moscow has repeatedly used Shahed-type drones against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

President Zelensky said Ukraine is willing to share its expertise in countering such threats, but only with nations that have supported Ukraine’s struggle to protect its people and sovereignty.

Israel has attempted to maintain a delicate balance since the Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022.

While Tel Aviv has provided humanitarian aid to Kyiv and supported pro-Ukraine resolutions at the United Nations, it has avoided supplying weapons and has sought to preserve a degree of neutrality in its relations with both sides.
