DOJ Targets ‘Extensive’ Migrant Smuggling Ring, 14 Indicted

The U.S. Department of Justice has announced charges against 14 individuals connected to what officials describe as a large-scale human smuggling network. In addition, eight people have already been taken into custody for their alleged involvement in transporting hundreds of undocumented migrants into the United States.

A federal grand jury in Las Cruces, New Mexico issued an indictment accusing the 14 suspects of conspiring to bring, transport, and hide undocumented migrants inside the country. According to a statement released by the DOJ, eight of those charged have been arrested so far.

Supervisory Official Antoinette T. Bacon of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division said the case involves a complex smuggling operation that placed migrants in extreme danger and ultimately led to the death of one person.

According to Bacon, federal investigators worked alongside the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to dismantle a Mexico-based smuggling organization that allegedly moved hundreds of migrants, including children traveling without parents, through areas of New Mexico and South Texas.

She emphasized that the Justice Department remains focused on dismantling international smuggling networks that exploit migrants for financial gain while also posing serious risks to U.S. national security.

The indictment states that the defendants allegedly coordinated efforts to illegally transport migrants from Mexico into the United States across the southern border. Prosecutors say the group then arranged transportation within the country and hid migrants in so-called “stash houses” during different stages of the journey.

Authorities claim the suspects sometimes attempted to avoid law enforcement by driving at dangerously high speeds. They also allegedly instructed migrants on how to evade U.S. Border Patrol agents and bypass immigration checkpoints.

Tragically, investigators say one migrant died from heat exposure during a smuggling attempt after being abandoned in the desert.
