“Please… save my granddaughter!”
The elderly man’s desperate plea echoed through the crowded hospital lobby.
In his trembling arms lay a little girl no older than six, her body burning with fever. Her tiny face was pale, her breathing shallow, and every few seconds she whimpered weakly against his shoulder.
The receptionist glanced at the computer screen.
“Do you have money for the admission deposit, sir?”
The old man’s hands tightened around the child.
“I… I’ll find a way. I promise. Just help her first, please.”
The receptionist looked uncomfortable but shook her head.
“I’m sorry. Those are the rules.”
The little girl suddenly wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Grandpa… don’t leave me…”
Her voice was barely a whisper.
The old man’s eyes filled with tears.
At that moment, a firm voice cut through the tension.
“Take the child to the emergency room. Right now.”
Everyone turned.
A doctor in a white coat was already walking toward them.
Without hesitation, he knelt beside the little girl and checked her pulse.
Then he looked up.
And froze.
For a moment, the world seemed to stop.
The old man stared back at him, equally shocked.
His lips trembled.
“Michael…”
Tears instantly filled his eyes.
“Michael… is it really you?”
The doctor’s face turned pale.
A flood of memories crashed into him.
A small farmhouse.
A loving father.
A painful goodbye.
Years of silence.
“Dad…?”
The word escaped his lips before he could stop it.
The entire hallway fell silent.
Nurses stood motionless.
Patients stopped talking.
Even the receptionist stared in disbelief.
The doctor and the old man simply looked at each other, separated by years of regret and unanswered questions.
But there was no time.
The little girl suddenly coughed violently.
“Move!” Michael shouted.
The nurses rushed forward and wheeled the child toward the emergency room.
The old man started to follow.
Then he grabbed Michael’s hand.
His face was trembling.
His voice broke.
“There’s something you need to know.”
Michael frowned.
“What is it?”
The old man swallowed hard.
His eyes drifted toward the emergency room doors.
Then he whispered the words that made the color drain from Michael’s face.
“The girl… she isn’t just my granddaughter.”
Michael’s heartbeat stopped.
“What do you mean?”
The old man took a shaky breath.
